Solon was a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and it is now part of Washington Township. The town was founded by Solomon Northup in 1814, as a result of land purchases from the Miami and Erie Canal Company. Northup named his new community after Athens, Georgia, where he had been born in 1795. It grew rapidly because of its location on the Scioto River, which made it easy to get goods to market. In 1825, Solon became an incorporated town and quickly became one of the most important towns in central Ohio. It was home to a large cotton plantation and also developed into a major port for shipping goods originating from east Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1830, Solon's mayoralty passed to John Beattie after Mayor Nicholas Gales died suddenly at age 54 years old. Beattie served as Solon's mayor until his death in 1841 at the age of 71 years old. He is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Solon with other notable pioneers such as George Washington Carver, Andrew Jackson Jackson, and Daniel Boone. The first store opened in Solon on October 12th 1814 by Solomon Northup with four barrels of flour (and no butter) for sale only to find that demand was so high that he ran out six days later! By 1800 there were over 100 businesses operating out ofSolon- making it one of America's largest commercial centers during this time period!

In 1830, the United States Congress passed the General Land Office Act, which created the land office to administer public lands. The act also authorized the erection of a courthouse and other municipal buildings. In 1835, Ohio became a state in the Union under President Andrew Jackson. In 1840, Ohio designated as its capital city Columbus. Columbus became one of the most important U.S hub cities during the 19th century because of its position as an economic center for East Coast cotton and pork production and its location on waterways that facilitated trade with Europe and Asia. The Great American Fire of 1861 destroyed much of downtown Columbus (and most of downtown Cincinnati) but notSolon; however, parts of Solon were burned down in 1865 due to Confederate troop occupation during the war effort. A new downtown was erected in time for the 1886 Columbian Exposition—the first large-scale exposition in America—but it collapsed within a year due to arson attempts by anarchists who believed that Expo attendees would support capitalism over socialism
