Solon was a town in Wayne County, Ohio, United States, until it was annexed by the city of Cleveland in 1892. It was named for Simon Bolivar Solon, an American statesman who served as the 26th president of Venezuela from 1829 to 1830. A post office called Solon was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. The town had a population of just over 150 people when it became part of Cleveland. The first settler in Solon Township was James Sweeting on July 10, 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now West High Street. By 1840 there were six families living in the township; two more arrived during the next year. By 1845 there were twenty-five families residing within its limits; four more arrived during the following two years. In early November 1846 three men – John Hagerty, George Wheeler and Isaac Purdy – land grantee and Surveyor General of Indian Territory John Ladd set out from their home at Wickliffe Rapids with fifteen hundred acres (60 hectares) of rich virgin forest lying between Geauga Creek on the east and Muskingum River on the west. The party traveled via Canandaigua Lake to what is now Delaware County before reaching Solon about December 1st situated on high ground overlooking both Geauga Creek and Muskingum River below which they began to clearland build their house(s). They erected poles around their dwelling with ropes attached while they await supplies brought overland by wagon or boatrosse from nearby towns including CleVELAND (now Cleveland). A site for a courthouse had been chosen by Ladd but no building could be completed without money being raised so a citizens' meeting convened at which Ladd proposed that $500 be contributed towards construction "the future public hall" if approved he then adjourned with about fifty-eight persons present voting against erecting any building until further notice…………….It has been generally accepted that this meeting marked the beginning of organized commercial activity within our township……….. After careful consideration by all who attended I certify that I am fully aware that $500 will not cover even one half inch of cost for this important public edifice………………………I declare therefore that I do not think it practicable to erect anything hereabouts till such time as we can get some proper appropriation from Congress." This meeting paved way forSolon's incorporation as a village on April 3rd, 1850 also under auspices of Indian Territory authorities……………………………………..This early development reflects little change since 1800 when Ohio Act granted Town lots NK $1 per acre
