The village quickly grew into a thriving center of commerce with several stores, two churches (the first being erected about 1850), one hotel, three gristmills (one of which still operates today), four Masonic lodges (two of which still operate), two schools (including one that has been converted into apartments), two gas stations/convenience stores/delivery services, and a few homes until it reached its current size around 1960 when Interstate 80 bypassed it entirely
