He built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street and called it Herring's Ferry Landing for himself and his family. Other early settlers included Captain John Heckelmeyer (1793-1844), Nathanael Greene (1795-1860), Jobn Wistar (1796-1864), Daniel Webster (1804-1865), Elias Hicks (1800-1854) and others who located along or near present day Elm Street/Washington Avenue between cucumber gardens/Nathanial Greene State Park to their west, Greenville Township to their north, Union Township to their east and Holmes County to their southeast corner land which they sold parcels of land unto future generations including James Pinchot Sr., Edward Hines Jr., Andrew Mellon Sr., vice president Nelson Averill Harriman among others

In 1875, Solon became the seat of Lucas County after being chosen by state legislators over more populous towns such as Dayton and Cuyahoga Falls. The move helped solidify Solon's place within Ohio's agricultural heartland and contributed to its strong economy for many years to come. Today,Solon remains a vibrant community filled with history – both its own and that of its neighbors who have lived here since before time itself started flowing eastward along the Great Lakes region."
