Solon, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Solon post office has been in operation since 1821. The first settler in what is now Solon was John Shields. Shields moved from Rhode Island and founded a small community on the Scioto River east of present-day Dayton. Shields's colony prospered for some time but eventually failed due to lack of food and water supplies as well as hostile Indians. Captain James Wilkinson landed his party at the forks of the Scioto River on July 5, 1797 and named it after George Washington's home state of Virginia (the original name for Columbus). Wilkinson also built a log cabin which served as headquarters for the new settlement until 1801 when he replaced it with a larger frame building known today as the Wilkes-Barre Post Office. In 1819 Solon received its own charter fromuoingo Township trustees capitalizing on land grants from General Asa Whitney and others. The township meetings were held at various locations until finally held in one large building by 1830 when prohibition made such meetings unwisely illegal. In 1830 Timothy Farnsworth established another small community about 12 miles northwest of Solon near present day Geneva before moving to Medina County in 1832 where he became an early settler in that area too In 1835 Bishop Ely purchased 640 acres (2 km²) north of present day Dayton near what is now Xenia then laid out into lots numbered 1 to 4 which formed village Greenville according to plans prepared by Colonel Robert Ewing Reverend Elijah Henson immigrated to America from Denmark in 1840 with five children including Solomon Henson who soon organized a Methodist Church serving both domestic and missionary purposes among pioneer Estonians living along Beaver Creek north of Xenia On November 24, 1850 Solomon Henson died suddenly leaving behind four orphans age 15 through 21 years old who had no say about their education or future prospects within their homeland which would have provided them with opportunities had they survived long enough According to historical records Rev Henson became Orphan Society trustee responsible for providing education, clothing and other needs******* A fire destroyed most or all buildings within three hours on December 16th 1865 following severe weather conditions during winter months ***** In 1870 Representative Ebenezer Tomlinson introduced legislation calling for responsibility for schools under county government *** On February 3rd 1870 thirty three citizens applied for membership in local school board later renamed Education Department ****** This period saw increased activity within agricultural communities adjacent to villages due largely to lack elsewhereof appropriate housing***** A two story frame schoolhouse was completed on lot number 5 west side blockWashington Road circa 1880 ***** By 1890 enrollment reached 2200 students******** After World War I many families left rural areas seeking better opportunities while others returned after technological advances opened up new markets ******* TodaySolon remains an agricultural communityalbeit with more recent developments******

Solon was a town in the Cincinnati, Ohio metropolitan area. It is now part of the Dayton suburb ofDaytona Beach. The town was founded in 1814 by Major General George Rogers Clark as a post on the Miami River for his regiment, the 3rd United States Infantry. The first store in Solon was built by Isaac Goodrich in 1815. In 1817, Captain John Fenton purchased land east of Solon and built a log cabin known as "The White House". In 1819, Solomon married Lydia Goodrich and they had four children: James A., Hannah P., Solomon H., and Martha E. In 1840, Captain Fenton's daughter Lydia died due to smallpox; he buried her there with him. On December 12, 1850, Solomon (then age 82) married his second wife Mary Ann Cary; they had six children: Franklin D., Edgar G., Joslyn Latchford (1858-1947), Clara Maud Jepson (1862-1945), Everett Bogue (1865-1943), and Orville Cleveland Cleveland (1867-1953). They also adopted two daughters from another marriage: Alice Mabel Cary (1900-1976) and Barbara Jane Cary Bolton (1902-1984). In 1865, when Ohio became a state following the American Civil War, Solon became an outpost of that state's military district headquartered at Camp Chase near Lebanon Junction on the Monongahela River. On July 8 of that year Congress created Solon Township out of parts of Harrisonburg Township north of Findlay Creek and south of Springvale Creek under territorial jurisdiction; Mason City Township had been created earlier that year from land east of Miami Valley Road between Springfield Ridge Road and South Fork Cairo Creek. Solon typified typical Ohio frontier life during this time: it possessed no formal school system until after 1830 when one was established in nearby Fairfield; residents learned to read and write only after 1800; men hunted game for subsistence until about 1860; women worked mainly in agriculture or seamanship until well into the 20th century. Solon lost its market importance during Plain Dealer times because southern Indiana gained commercial access to Ohio through Sandusky Bay while Dayton grew larger; however some people still refer to Solon - home since 1814 - as their "second hometown." After Plain Dealer sale to Hearst Corporation in 1995 most likely all references to Solon were discontinued except for occasional used items sold at flea markets
