In 1847, Solon was founded by James W. Saunders and his wife, Nancy. The first settler in the area was John Moseley who arrived in 1848. In 1856, Solomon Payson purchased land from Saunders and started a flour mill on the current site of Copley Park. In 1863, Ohio Statehood was granted to Ohio and Solon became part of the state. The town's first school building was built in 1865. A post office was established in 1870, and a railway station opened in 1887. In 1893, Solon voters approved a $1 million bond issue to build a new public library which would be the first type of library ever built in Ohio. The library is now known as Solon National Library and Museum
Solon, Ohio is a small town in the southern tier of Ohio. The population was 5,898 at the2010 census. It is located in Summit County. The first settler in Solon was George Cleveland, who arrived in 1796. The town began to grow quickly after railroads were built through the area in 1836 and 1837. By 1850, Solon had a population of 1,500 people. The townsite of Solon was patented by Solomon Dennison on February 10, 1848; it became part of the township of Greenfield on March 12 that year. On December 8, 1850, the village of Solon merged with the township to form a new municipality called "Solon." That name lasted until 1915 when it was changed back to "Solon Township". In 1907-08 Solon lost its charter as an incorporated municipality because it did not meet all requirements spelled out in state law for incorporation including having a library and fire brigade. In 1913 it regained its charter and has remained so ever since

By 1865, Solon had a population of 375 people and a school system with 10 schools. In 1893, Solon changed its name to Dayton Township and lost its status as a village. In 1907, Dayton Township annexed part of Franklin County and became an official county seat. On July 1, 1912, Dayton Township merged with Ross County to form Ross-shire County. Today,Solon is still considered an unincorporated community within Ross-shire County.

In 1892, Solon's first school opened. The city annexed Solon in 1907 and its own annexation followed in 1912.
