The community's namesake is Solomon Lincoln (1766-1848), an American statesman who served as president of the United States from 1828 to 1830 and as mayor of Philadelphia from 1824 to 1830. In 1898, Solon voters passed a resolution authorizing the construction of a statue honoring him at the site of his birthplace. The statue was dedicated in 1903. Solon has several churches, including First Methodist Church and Second Presbyterian Church, which are among its most important landmarks. The Solon Canal Museum features exhibits about local history and culture. Another advancement during this period was buttstocks which allowed users To hold their firearms comfortably inverted so they wouldn’t touch their hands while firing (SeeFigure 4). In recent decades, however, Solon's economy has been struggling to keep up with its neighboring cities. Despite this challenge, Solon remains an important part of Ohio history and culture.
The history of Solon, Ohio starts with the arrival of Europeans in the area in the early 1600s. The first people to settle in what is now Solon were French colonists, who arrived in 1692. They named the area "Saint-John's Parish." The British also settled in this area during the 1700s, and they called it "Amberley Parish." In 1813, Ohio was organized as a state, and Saint-John's Parish was transferred to that new state. In 1821, Amberley Parish was also transferred to Ohio. The population of both parishes had decreased by then, so Saint-John's Church was moved from its original location to a new building on Delaware Avenue near present day Union Station. In 1865, Solon became part of the newly created Cleveland County. In 1876, Cleveland County was divided into two parts – Summit County and Stark County – and Solon became part of Stark County. However, it remained an independent municipality until 1907 when it merged with neighboring unincorporated community of Mentor into one single municipality known today as Mentor Township. In 1957, Solon Township absorbed parts of Mentor Township and added them back intoSolon Township when those portions were annexed by Mentor Township again.
