The first post office was established in 1839 and until 1862, Solon was served by the mail from Cincinnati. In 1861, the Union Army burned down the old courthouse inSolon as part of their campaign against slavery. Over time, other local businesses became involved in post office operations such as a hotel and several stores. By 1865, there were just 15 residents living in Solon with an average population size of only 50 people per year. After the Civil War ended, many American soldiers returned home and began to settle in central Ohio including Solon. Many of these new arrivals would help contribute to the growth ofSolon over time including men like George Stephenson who built much of what is now Cleveland while working for Jno Matson & Co., one of America's largest shipping companies at that time. In 1924, Solon absorbed neighboring townships (Hamilton Township on the east side and Springdale Township on the west side) into its boundaries making it larger than ever before with a total population of 615 people! Today, thanks to continued growth throughout its history – both within and beyond its borders – Solon continues to enjoy strong community ties which continue to make it an excellent place to live and work!
