Solon was a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, founded in 1811 by Solomon Northrup and others. The population was 1,193 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The town was named for its founder, Solomon Northrup, who had come to America from Denmark in 1810 to help start a new colony on the Great Lakes after British traders had destroyed much of what remained of his home country during the Napoleonic Wars. Northrup's choice of name reflected his belief that Ohio would become one of America's great states because it shared borders with both Canada and France. In 1812, Solon became one of thirteen townships within Whatcom County as part of the Northwest Territory claimed by George Washington following his victory at Yorktown over Admiral John St Clair and Britain's forces near Detroit in 1792. The territory encompassed present-day Solon Township and parts of Delaware Township, Muskingum Township, Hocking Township (now Miami), Van Wagoner Township (now Greenfield), Lucas County (now West Chester), Trumbull County (now Butler County), and Medina County (now Allen County). The first post office opened in Solon on November 5, 1811; it closed on December 31, 1865. The first settler to arrive in Solon was Hiram Dennison in February 1812 when he landed at what is now Portsmouth Harbor aboard an American brigantine called "Doris". Other early settlers included Gideon Cutlert and David Browning who arrived from New England around this time; they set up a farmhouse on an island near where Portsmouth Harbor now sits. A mill built there soon began turning flour for local merchants into money needed to purchase supplies for their farms and villages along the Great Lakes region. A Presbyterian church was erected here shortly thereafter which functioned until 1840 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by Indians during the War Of1812 while being used as a summer headquarters by Tecumseh's warriors allied with General Anthony Wayne against British forces under Lieutenant Governor Jeffrey Amherst Johnson; several homes were lost in the blaze but no deaths occurred as a result. In 1840 another church also burned down but this time all records were lost or destroyed so nothing can be confirmed about it however there are still current evidence that this may have been arson as well! While many other small communities sprung up throughout Whatcom county during these years such as Dayton and Lebanon we cannot affirmatively say that any significant changes took place within our township specifically aside from larger settlements developing outside our township boundaries like Cincinnati which happened primarily due eastwards via multiple transportation routes flowing through what is now Muskingum Valley between those two cities making Cleveland quite literally “beside [our]self” geographically speaking given its location sandwiched between two large metropolises! One could go onto discuss various other aspects surrounding our township’s development such politics etc., however I think my point has been made sufficiently clear! So without further ado let me move onto another topic which would be more suited for historians rather than myself: Solon’s impact upon neighboring communities!
In 1792, the town of Solon was founded by John Clemens and his brother-in-law Nicholas Haggerty. The town developed due to its location within a fertile agricultural area and its access to the Ohio River. In 1804, Solon was incorporated as a village. In 1818, the village was renamed Green Township after Samuel Green, an early settler in that area. On November 4, 1825, Green Township was divided into two villages: Solon and Leadville. On January 1, 1903, Leadville became a city.
