Solon is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Miami and Erie Canal. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Cincinnati metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1799 by Solomon Northrup and others under the name of Canonsburg Township, after its founder's home near Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The first settler in Solon was Methodist Episcopal preacher Levi Coffin who arrived there about 1800.. A post office called Solon was established in 1807, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1839. As railroad transportation increased throughout Ohio during the 19th century, farming became more important than industrial production; this led to a rapid growth of industry around Solon as well as other towns along the canal system which benefited from cheap labor and easy access to markets. By 1900 Solon had reached its peak with a population of over 10,000 people living in small villages scattered around its rural landscape. However, during World War I economic hardships hit Solon hard with jobs lost due to manufacturing shutdowns across eastern Ohio; however, like many other small towns affected by wartime rationing programs,Solon bounced back quickly thanks to support from local businesses and farmers alike. Solon, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Columbiana County. The population was 7,521 as of the 2010 census. The name may derive from the Solonian School District, which was established in 1892 in response to an appeal for a school district by voters in neighboring Sandusky Township. The first settler in what is now Solon was John Harper, who arrived on horseback from what is now West Virginia on July 4, 1792. He named his farm "Harper's Ferry." Harper had come overland from Virginia with his family and others seeking independence from Great Britain and wanted to establish a new home away from home. There were no permanent settlements until after President James K. Polk sent troops to destroy Fort Harrison near Vandalia on December 12, 1813, during the War of 1812 (the war that ended with Tecumseh's Treaty). American soldiers burned down Harper's Ferry and took all his goods except for 10 cows that he transported back to Pennsylvania with him on their return trip. The town site at present-day Solon was platted by John Cribb as part of a land grant given him by Governor George Washington in 1800. The grant included 640 acres (2 km2) north of where modern-day Cleveland stands and east of Clinton Township along the then-northwestern edge of Columbiana County; it also included parts of what are now Delaware and Mahoning counties. In 1801, Solomon Snyder moved into the township located within Grant Township; he donated $1,000 towards construction of a schoolhouse and erected a stockade around it to protect himself and his family against Indians who might attack them while he attended religious services at Nanticoke Methodist Church two miles northeastward across Clinton Road from where he lived at Solon Pointe (now Parkersburg). This first schoolhouse stood until 1902 when it burned down; replaced later by another school building also built between 1902–1903 but destroyed by fire in 1945–46; this one became known as SOLON HILL SCHOOL HOUSE following its donation to SOLON COUNTY BY THE PEOPLE OF SOLON IN 1951 In 1802 there were only three families living here: Solomon Snyder & wife Esther Snyder & children 5 boys & 3 girls ages 9 months old – they raised crops & hunted game etc.; their 2 youngest sisters went off to live with other families nearby during that time because there wasn’t enough space for them here too! One can imagine how difficult life must have been back then especially since today’s streets are so straight! Solomon died suddenly just before Halloween1802/3 so all these kids growing up during those days probably didn’t get much education because no one knew about college or anything like that back then! Next door next door lived Peter Davenport 1&2 Sons f retailers 6 month old twins brother Jonathan Davenport 3 years old born Oct 25th 1796 ditto Died Sept 14th 1830 his widow Parke stayed behind till her death Dec 20th 1840 she was 82 yrs old Now our street names reflect this history!
The village of Solon was platted in 1824. The first post office was established in 1828. As a result, the population of Solon grew rapidly during its early years. In 1830, Solon became the county seat for Lucas County. In 1836, the legislature passed an act creating a new township within Lucas County named for General David Blackwood. The township was erected on land that had been donated by George Brown and others. The first settler to arrive in Solon was James Aiken and his family in 1837.
