The area that now makes up Sidney was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Lucas County in 1795-97 after being claimed by David Rensselaer from New York as part of his purchase from the Lenape people. In 1802, General George Washington ordered Major General Robert Ewell to build Fort Delaware on the east side of the Scioto River in what is now Sidney because American settlers were scared off by British military forces occupying eastern Ohio at that time. The fort served as a supply depot for American troops during their war with Great Britain starting in 1794-1798. In 1801, Sidney became part of newly formed Ross Township which had been created out of parts of Scioto Township and other townships west of Toledo due to land grants given tohorribile farmers by President James Ketchum following his victory over Tecumseh's Rebellion on October 15th, 1800 near modern day Painesville Heights northwest of downtown Toledo. In 1830-31 when Sidney's boundaries changed much less than those currently inhabited within its limits it included all or most present day Huron Township including present day Eastlake Village; parts or all present day Ottawa Hills; and portions or all present day Waterloo Village; making it one largest township before it lost much territory subsequent annexation times until reaching its current size today as Sidney proper only includes much recent suburban development within its original town boundaries while Huron Township still contains large amounts rural land outside those limits lying east/west along US Route 22 between Dayton & Cincinnati OH Many Sidneys residents may have ancestors who lived where they do today prior to 1900 when farmsteads were larger
