Sidney, Ohio is a city of about 100,000 people in the eastern part of the state of Ohio. The population has grown rapidly throughout the 20th century and now exceeds 300,000. Sidney was founded by General George Washington in 1788 as a small town on the Scioto River. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the center of eastern Ohio and its position as a transportation hub for goods and passengers travelling between Cincinnati and Columbus. In 1827, Sidney became an incorporated city with a population of over 20000. In 1872, Sidney annexed neighboring townships to form the present-day Sidney Township. The city was named in honor of Commodore John Cushing who served as Mayor from 1889 to 1893. A large printing press operated by Associated Press (AP) located in downtown Sidney provided news coverage for much of central Ohio during this time period. The presses were destroyed by fire on October 15, 1906 which caused major damage to downtown business districts including The State Capitol building which still stands today!

Sidney, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. It lies east of the village of Sidney and west of the village of Rome. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Sidney was part of the Shawnee Indian Reservation until 1821 when it became part of the United States. The first settler in what is now Sidney was John Hawley who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on a knoll about two miles northeast of present-day Sidney. A post office was established here in 1800, and remained In operation until 1903. In 1824, General Anthony Wayne's forces passed through this area on their way to battle against Native Americans at Fallen Timbers Creek near Macedonia. As a result, many settlers moved into this area during that period as wariemnts ensued between American and Native American troops over land grants and other issues. One such group included Lewis Cass (one time Governor of Michigan), David Dixon (a lawyer who had previously served as Ulysses S Grant's attorney general), James Fenimore Cooper (the author who wrote "The Pioneers", "Life among the Indians", and "Walking with Spirits"), Jabez Bowen (of Philadelphia), Daniel Webster (US Senator from Massachusetts), Archibald Coxe (a fur trader/politician), Daniel Webster's brother-in-law Israel Putnam (Governor of New York state from 1850 to 1853) Alfred Vail (President pro tempore for Pennsylvania in Congress from 1830 to 1840) Cyrus Stonebanks Amesbury(1795–1872) Elisha Chauncey Aldrich(1798–1855)) This influx led to enlargement or subdivision of pioneer settlements around what is now Sidney due primarily to cheap land availability rather than any cultural or environmental influence from nearby Shawnee Village or Rome which were much older villages with more significant native populations then those present in central Ohio at that time

Sidney, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is along the path of the Great Lakes River Valley on the southern edge of Greater Cleveland, which has been a major manufacturing center since before American independence. Sidney became an incorporated town in 1851, after being bypassed by Methodism-dominated Franklin Township when that township was established east of Sidney on what is now State Route 22. The first settler in Sidney was George Haggerty who platted a town lot on Monongahela River near what is now downtown Sidney in 1823. Two years later he sold his share to Joseph Pemberton for $1,000 cash and went into business as a carriage builder and stagecoach conductor with his brother Nathan Pemberton until 1830 when they sold their interests to John Stephenson for $5,000 including land around present day Greenfield Village. John Stephenson had come from Portsmouth, England as an immigrant in 1814 and founded one of America's first commercial ports at Portsmouth on the Muskegon Peninsula where he operated a shipyard until 1800 when he moved his operations to Canton (now Warren) Michigan due to competition from Detroit merchants shipping goods inland via Lake Erie through Buffalo Harbor. When Stephenson built his own mill on what is now State Route 222 just south of Sidney in 1824 he became one of America's early entrepreneurs with broad industrial interests including wagonmaking; glassblowing; slag ironing; oven making; printing presses; lumber yards; cheese production; salt production and other enterprises over many years during which he also served as mayor and recorder for Sidney. In 1850 Sidney incorporation followed suit becoming one of America's largest towns by acreage failed to gain approval from its trustees because it offered no jail or schoolhouse although ballots were circulated among residents urging incorporation but no action was taken because wealthy citizens like Samuel Morse donated money towards construction instead In 1861 Alfred Iverson organized settlers northeastward along Scioto Avenue (now part of I-71) after hearing rumors that there would be gold found near Painesville Heights - so named because its high ground made possible easy exploration thanks to nearby hills providing perfect access to water levels above lowlands lying between Muskegon Heights and Painesville Township - following news reports indicating that General Custer had discovered gold fields northwest Kansas City across US 137 miles (225 kilometers) away while pursuing Indians eastward toward Fort Dayton In 1863 when Union forces burned down Warsaw Bridge across Little Miami River near present day Lucasville they destroyed much equipment used by Confederate troops transporting supplies upriver past Warsaw prior thereto resulting in numerous civilian casualties especially among men working upstream including future Mayor Elihu Seaton who lost both legs below knee due immediately afterward during repairs supervised by Captain Ebenezer Baird Aftermath President Andrew Johnson orderedGeneral Philip Sheridan to send army under Major General John Ewing southeastward through Knox County (part today called Delaware County) into Search for & Destroy any Rebel Forces anywherealong US 9 north & east thereof (& vicinity surrounding Cincinnati if found) starting April 1865 without notice or warning to inhabitants living downstream primarily small farmers & fishermen dependent upon commerce not then stopped except for brief period following Battle Of Perrysburg which ended mostRebel activity northwest/southwestof Cincinnati owned by large landowners mostly Whites only
Sidney, Ohio was founded in 1796 by Captain John Sidney. The city became a county seat in 1802 and was renamed Sidney in 1811 after General James Wilkinson, the first United States Secretary of War. In 1814, the city was destroyed by a fire that burned for three days.
