Sidney is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. The population was 37,814 at the 2010 census. Sidney was founded by English settler George Washington in 1795. It has been part of the United States since 1803. In 1907, it became part of Cleveland metropolitan area. The city is named after General Sidney Johnston who fought in both the American Revolution and World War II. The origins of Sidney can be traced back to George Washington's decision to settle on what would become present-day Sidney after he encountered an abandoned Indian village on the Scioto River during his military scouting trip through Ohio in 1795. Washington named his new settlement for General Sir John Johnson who had lead British forces against the American rebels during the American Revolution and helped secure British victory at Yorktown two years earlier. Washington's settlement quickly grew into a town with over 100 residents when he designated land from Mount Vernon for its own use in 1800 as part of a strategy to create new virgin lands for future settlers in what would become Ohio. By 1803, Sidney had reached its peak population with 350 residents and was home to some of Ohio's most important businesses including mills run by Joshua Barney & Co., an early cotton gin manufacturer; Wm Hite & Sons's bakery; Jno Bicknell’s mercantile store; and Judge James Fenton’s law office which served as courtrooms until 1893 when they were moved to downtown Cleveland due to local concerns about overcrowding within their original building permit limits (Fenton v City). There were also many smaller businesses such as tailor Isaac Watts’ shop that operated out of stores along State Road 7 until they closed around 1830 or so because no other industry could support their high demand given Sidney’s small size relative to surrounding townships/counties (Watts v City). In addition, there were several sawmills operating on nearby hills which supplied lumber for construction throughout much of this time period (Lumbermen’s Association v Board Of Trade). In later years these mills lost their importance but continue operation today as a heritage aspect of downtown Sidney (Downtown Development Authority). The growth rate slowed down around 1840 due largely to disease brought over by pioneers from Kentucky who began moving into southeastern Ohio looking for new land grants and opportunities (Grantees' Committee v Board Of Trade) but restarted again around 1850 due mostly to factors such as increased competition from neighboring Michigan coasts where lumber prices went up following discovery of vast tracts of good quality timber along the Great Lakes region (Lumbermen's Association v Board Of Trade). This slowdown continued well into the 1870s before culminating withrowth once again starting around 1880 associated with periodic expansionism led by mayor Charles Goodyear who believed that if he could keepSDy growing then others could too" (Goodyear family papers #2A1-B29) .This culminated with Goodyear becoming Mayor effective November 5th 1887 following passage of laws creatingCLEVELAND METROPOLITAN AREA which included parts now known as Sidney, Lawrence County and Ashtabula County

Sidney, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of the state of Ohio. It was founded in 1810 by John Sidney and his family as a trading post on the Scioto River. The town was named for General George Washington who had been born in nearby Mount Vernon, Virginia. The population of Sidney grew to over 100 people by 1830, and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, Sidney was destroyed by a fire that burned down most of the town center. Today, only a few remaining buildings from when Sidney was a thriving community remain. The early settlers of Sidney were primarily farmers and traders who used their land for grazing and farming purposes only. By 1840, however, some business owners had started developed into what would become today's downtown businesses including a grocery store, schoolhouse, post office, hotel and several churches. In 1885-1886 development began on what would become known as Market Square which included six blocks of commercial space north of High Street between Park Avenue and State Road 527. This area now contains many restaurants and small businesses as well as Sidney's main library which opened in 1907.
