Sidney, Ohio is a town in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Scioto County. The first settler in Sidney was John Sayers who came from Somerset, England in 1814. He built a log cabin on the south side of what is now Main Street and named it Sidney after his birthplace Sidney in England. Other early settlers were James Moreland and his brother David Moreland (1821-1912). They arrived with their families in 1824 and took out land grants that covered . In 1830, they combined with other towns to form Scioto Township under the leadership of Peter Hall. In 1835, the township became part of Scioto County when it was organized. A courthouse was built soon afterward and functions continued until 1896 when it burned down. The present courthouse was designed by architect Nathan Comstock and dedicated on October 8, 1897. It replaced an old frame structure which had been used for school purposes since 1828. The courthouse seated about 150 people at its peak but has since been reduced to use as a community center with space for only about 50 people today. A post office operated at Sidney from March 7, 1800 until May 12th 1912; during this time there were only six mail carriers serving the town which totaled 1,557 miles total delivery volume The first train service into Sidney began on November 15th 1902 when Columbus-Youngstown-Sidney Train left downtown for Powelltown via Main Street Today's economy primarily revolves around farming with some light manufacturing activity as well as services such as construction or health care As one of sister townships to Youngstown (north) and Columbus (south), Sidney has grown close to its fellow citizens while maintaining strong cultural ties unique among all three communities Both Youngstown andColumbus offer many opportunities for economic development including higher education within their respective borders while also providing ample opportunity for family living inside city limits
