Sidney, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Sidney was Capt. John Smith in 1795. He noted that there were "a few white people" living in and around the town but he did not find it very hospitable because of its lack of natural resources and harsh weather conditions. In 1802, Gen. James Ketchum built a cabin on Sidney's east side for himself and his family before moving permanently to what is now Akron the following year. A post office was established at Sidney in 1807, and growth continued until 1828 when an act of Congress made it a county seat. The area now known as Sidney became part of Stark County in 1850 when it was organized from Summit Township. In 1868, during the American Civil War, General David Hunter decided to attack Fort Howard which resulted in extensive damage to Sidney Creek which still forms the eastern border of town today. The Battle of Gettysburg took place nearby on July 4th near present day Mentor Road and Valley Rd., less than one mile west of where Binghamton High School currently stands (although this site has been abandoned since 1945). This battle left over 100 dead including many soldiers who died along Sidney Creek between miles marker 9 & 10 on State Route 22 just south of downtown Sidney
