He erected some houses there for himself and started farming but soon realized that he would need more land so he set off for what is now Ottawa Township (now Holmes County) where he bought 7 acres (2 ha) from John Fenton on December 12th, 1814. From this spot he began to build what would become known as Goudreau's Farmstead which still stands today adjacent to US Highway 6 west of town center between Howard Road and Broadway Avenue .
