The town was founded in 1837 by John Sharon and his wife Abigail. It became a part of Ohio when it was created from parts of West Virginia and Kentucky on April 1, 1792. In 1875, Sharonville was renamed after General George Washington to honor him for his role in the American Revolution. The town has had a variety of names over the years including Sharonesville, Upper Arlington, and Wooster. The first post office called Sharonville (the original name) was established in 1837 and served until 1842. The first store opened in 1840 and remained open until 1915. The first school opened in 1841 and continued until 1911. The first telephone service arrived in 1865. In 1907, an amusement park called Parkland was built adjacent to the high school which remains today as one of the most popular attractions in town. Parkland closed down during World War II but reopened again after the war as Village Hall Park which still operates today In 1925, Presbyterian minister Drury Gifford donated land south of town for use as a Methodist church campus known as Mount Pleasant Chapel which still stands today . Mount Pleasant Chapel closed down during Prohibition but reopened following repeal In 1955-1957 two new schools were built; One north off Route 522 near where now Walmart is located while another across from FirstEnergy Stadium on current day I-71 highway merged with US Routes 22 & 27 making it one large school system that included both rural areas east of I-71 as well as downtown Sharonville

In 2006, Middleton lost its status as an independent city and merged with Shaker Heights into one municipality.
