Sharonville is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the University Heights campus of The Ohio State University. The population was 12,062 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Mentor, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1814 by Nicholas Holmes and others as part of a land grant to John Fenton from the federal government. It was named for Sharon Township, Pennsylvania, where Holmes had come to live after leaving his native England. The first settler in Sharonville was David Wimbush, who arrived in 1825 and built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. Sharonville's earliest mills were operated by local farmers until 1857 when Amos Kendall opened an flour mill on what is now East Main Street. By 1865, three other mills had been established: one by Elijah Morse on South High Street; one by Horace White on West High Street; and one by George Jepson on North Main Street (now Delaware Avenue). In 1870–71, James Tilton erected a large frame house which served as the first courthouse in Sharonville. In 1902–03, he added two more stories to his structure and renamed it "The State House". In 1903–04, he donated land to make room for a new library which would serve as the town's main civic center until 1912 when its building became inadequate and it relocated to its current location near Delaware Avenue and Park Road (now Riverside Drive). In 1907–08, residents voted to change their name from "Sherman" to "Sharonville." On March 1 of that year they held a referendum with 95% turnout showing that they wished to become known as "Sharonville." The townspeople funded construction of their own schoolhouse which replaced the old county courthouse/library building from 1912 until 1928 when it burned down.
