Sharonville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 41,193 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Midwestern United States on the southern edge of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Zelienople Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1824 as a toll station on Summit Creek by General James Wilkinson, who named it for his daughter, Sharon Hill (1805-1875). When Wilkinson died in 1827, his son-in-law Henry Cuyahoga took over management of the station and renamed it for himself, becoming known as "Cuyahoga Heights." In 1833, John Dennison donated land to make up part of what is now Sharonville. The town prospered thanks to its location along two major trade routes: the Miami and Erie Canal ran through town, and local farmers exported produce from their fields to cities such as Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1868, when Mahoning County was formed from parts of Vinton and Perry counties, Sharonville became its county seat. The new courthouse was built on Third Street between Clinton Boulevard and Park Avenue in 1870; it still stands today and is used as a courtroom by Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. That same year saw also another milestone for Sharonville: its first electric streetcar arrived service from downtown Dayton to Union Terminal on Market Street just east of Ohio State Route 16 (now University Drive). During World War II,[2] many residents worked at Three Mile Island nuclear plant nearranning during wartime shortages caused by American involvement in Europe;[3] however only one civilian worker died from exposure there.[4] The plant closed after nine years in 1973 due to increased safety concerns with other nuclear plants around the country – including those operated by Westinghouse Electric Corporation – but not before leaving behind an estimated 2 million pounds(lbs) of spent fuel rods that had to be cleaned up and disposed off site[5]

In 1898, the town lost its charter due to pressure from larger towns to annex. The population declined until it peaked at 16,500 in 1950 before declining again. In 2000, it had 6,600 residents.
