The Village of Sharonville was laid out in 1853 by pioneer settlers John and Polly Potter. The name “Sharonville” comes from a place in Pennsylvania called Shamokin which means "happening to be there." In 1871, the Potters subdivided their land into tracts and named one of these tracts "Sharonville". This name stuck and has been used ever since. In 1865, two brothers named Levi and George Hilsbury bought 160 acres (66 hectares) of land east of Sharonville from David Applewhite for $8 per acre. This land became known as Hilsbury Heights. They began to build homes on this tract which included the present-day town of Sharonville. In 1887, Levi passed away leaving his holdings to his son-in-law Hermann Pohl who continued to live on the property until his death in 1942. "Hermann Pohl was born December 3rd 1888 in Schwarzenbruch a district near Königsberg Poland now within East Prussia". After World War II he moved back home to America where he founded Pohl Realty Corporation located today's town center with its six blocks long shopping mall (Kroger), Wawa convenience store/cafeteria chain restaurant/bar (Powell's Books & More), four churches (Church of Christ - A&M Synagogue; First Baptist Church; Nazarene Evangelical Lutheran Church; Methodist Episcopal Church - Sharonville United Methodist) along with many other businesses including: three car dealerships titled "National Lincoln", " Ford Motor Company" and "Jeep", eleven insurance companies incorporated as Trust Companies Of American LIFE Insurance Company Incorporated," after serving as President Director General Treasurer And Vice President National Association Insurance Trust Company Limited Partnership Trustees since 1902 when company opened doors For insurance industry first time in history! Today much like then, Hermann Pohl played an integral role not only within society but also within his own family dynamics by working hard both inside and outside the business establishment while still nurturing aspects of traditional German values that have helped define him through successive generations."
