Shaker Heights, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that is located on the border of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Shaker Heights" is derived from a group of Native Americans who lived there before white settlers arrived in 1788. The first Europeans to see Shaker Heights were French traders in 1789, and they called it Point Pleasant because they saw an Indian trading post there. In 1802, when General George Washington passed through central Ohio on his way to battle France, he camped at what is now Delaware Avenue and Main Street in Shaker Heights and ordered two men to show him where the Monongahela River flowed into Lake Erie. By 1808, some colonists had built a log cabin at what is now Euclid Road and Delaware Avenue for militia captain Samuel Eaton (1757-1832). Eaton became one of America's earliest entrepreneurs and developed Shaker Heights as one of its most successful commercial communities. He also founded Eatonville (now Arlington Heights) as a foothills community north of Cleveland between Euclid Road and I-70/I-480 in 1824." Eatonville experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a village in 1830; by 1840 it had over 1,000 residents living inside five blocks along Delaware Avenue near Westlake Boulevard. During the 1840s many new churches were built including St John’s Lutheran Church (1841), First Baptist Church (1842), German Evangelical Lutheran Congregational Church (1843), Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel (1845), Grove United Methodist Church (1848), First Presbyterian Church trustees' home (1849) – all within five blocks of each other on Delaware avenue near Westlake Boulevard – creating what would become one of America's largest city neighborhoods outside New York City or Philadelphia

It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Shaker Heights area has been inhabited by some of America's earliest Congregationalists for more than two hundred years. Reverend Zechariah Chandler and his family settled in what is now Shaker Heights in 1809. They were followed by other families over time, until there were only a few remaining early Shakers in 2003 when they sold their property to the city of Cleveland for $20 million. One reason that Shaker Heights remains an active religious community today is its proximity to several universities and research institutions including Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University and Youngstown State University. Additionally, many businesses and organizations have their headquarters here such as Rubbermaid (now Dow Corning), Lennar Corporation (now Hiram Corp.), Atari Inc., Chiquita Brands International Inc., Apple Inc., Chrysler LLC and many others. Shaker Heights also became known for its production of tin cans - one of the first commercially successful can manufacturing techniques - during the late 1800s through to the 1930s. Tin can production stopped after World War II but resumed in the 1950s with new technology using lead acid batteries instead of tin cans which helped make them environmentally friendly and less wasteful overall than traditional canned foods products
Shaker Heights is an unincorporated community in the southern part of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1836 by Congregationalist ministers from New England. The community became a center for religious education and social services after it was moved to its present location near the confluence of the Perkiomen River and Lake Erie in 1881.
