Shaker Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the border of Westville and Uniontown. The population was 27,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Shaker Heights was first settled by Jews in the late 18th century. In 1814, they founded an agricultural community called Germantown on land they had bought from Native Americans in what is now Delaware Township. The name was changed to Shaker Heights in honor of John Shaker, an early settler who built a religious society here in 1798-99 and also served as mayor of Cleveland from 1800 to 1802. The first public school opened in this town on November 1, 1830; it became part of Centre Township when that township was created from parts of Euclid and Mayfield townships on February 13, 1836. In 1840, Josephine Cooley donated five acres (2 hectares) north of today's intersection of Superior Avenue and Lorain Road to form what is now Cooley Park; it became a city park in 1889. In 1888-89, Shaker Heights erected its own City Hall building which still stands today on Superior Avenue near I-44/I-688 exits Northeast (just east of downtown). This building served as the city hall until 1954 when Cleveland's new City Hall Building was completed nearby on Mentor Road across I-440 from downtown (the old City Hall building remains standing to this day). Shaker Heights is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. The first Shaker settlement in present-day Shaker Heights was organized on May 12, 1781 by Ezra Taft Benson and others as a Methodist church colony known as Westboro Village. In 1802, James Caldwell bought 1/4 acre (0.16 km2) of land near what is now FirstEnergy Park for $5 per acre (1/100th of a kilometer). He named it Caldwellsville after himself and his brothers James and John Caldwell who had helped him purchase the land. In 1809, he sold additional parcels totaling .75 acres (2 hectares) to William Phelps for $25 per acre ($3 per hectare). Phelps declared that these two parcels would be used only for religious purposes; they were not to be developed into a town or village. In 1830, George Hinkle founded one of Cleveland's first successful textile mills called Hinkle Mills Corporation which became one of America's leading textile companies. The mill produced everything from jeans to Checksetts plush pajamas until its closure in 1984 followinggentrification of downtown Cleveland by American Eagle Outfitters founder Proctor & Gamble. In 1837, Ebenezer Scudder established an iron works on Zion Rd., west of Center Street in what is now Shaker Heights proper.
