In addition to its buildings and streets, Shaker Heights has a rich history with many events and people that have shaped the town. The first settler in what is now Shaker Heights was Isaac Morehouse. He brought his family to this area in 1821 from Rhode Island. Morehouse helped found the village of Easton on October 17, 1821. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Shaker Heights. Over time, other families came to live here as well: Methodists (1830-1902), Baptists (1831-1912), Presbyterians (1832-1920), Jews ( 1880s-1990s), Italians (1900s-2010s) The early years of Shaker Heights were difficult due to competition from other villages around the area for land and jobs within the new community of Akron. However, by 1860 Shaker Heights had become one of the most prosperous towns in Northwest Ohio due to its contributions to manufacturing including soapstone products In 1898 two brothers named George Washington Bainbridge bought land northeast of downtown Akron for $2 per acre which they called Bainbridge Park after their father who had also owned land there earlier In 1912 Cleveland Rubber Company built a plant on Canfield Road near present day Orchard Street In 1951 local banker Edward Jelinek formed Taylor Bank which still operates today as Oneonta Savings Banks branch #412 By 1970shopping malls had sprung up all around Northeast Ohio such as The Mall at Ridgemont Center shopping center located just east of current day I-271 off I-675 northbound exit 4A Today much of what once made up downtown Akron are gone but some notable landmarks remain such as The First Congregational Church building which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978

Shaker Heights began as a small village on the Scioto River in 1814 and grew to become one of the largest towns in Muskingum County. The town was named for Shakers who had fled from British rule and settled in North America in 1787. The first meeting of the township's trustees took place on February 24, 1814. In 1830, Shaker Heights became an incorporated village under the name of Strongsville. In 1836, it renamed itself again to Shaker Heights after Elijah Hicks (1772-1856), an early settler and political leader in the area who helped establish public schools and other civic amenities here. The commercial development that followed during the mid-19th century led to Shaker Heights becoming one of Cleveland's most successful communities economically and socially. Many successful entrepreneurs were born or raised here – including Edwin Halsey (1868-1948), who founded Halsey Rubber Company; James Fenton (1865-1959), founder of JF Electronics; Alfred Pritzker (1900-1988), cofounder of The Chicago Tribune Co.; Irving Furniture Company; Cyrus Eaton (1866-1941), general manager of American Tobacco Company; Jane Addams (1847-1927), women's rights advocate and founder of Hull House; Herbert Hoover (1935–2012); Roger Buehler (born 1945) – president and CEO of Cuyahoga Community College System; Asha Ratna Zandile Dlamini – chairperson for African National Congress - South Africa since 2006 There have been many famous residents associated with Shaker Heights over time: such as basketball players Julius Erving (born 1944) and Julius Erving Sr., actors Harry Belafonte and Betty Grable, singer Joe Bonamassa, author Clyde Tolson, baseball writer Bob Knight, business magnate George Soros,, football player Tim Tebow,, popular Steeleye West frontman John Lennon
Shaker Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 33,868 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Ross County after Cuyahoga Falls. It is also one of the most populous cities in Greater Cleveland, with a population of 553,711 as of July 1, 2016. Shaker Heights was founded by Congregationalists who arrived from England in 1787. They named their town after Shakers - a religious sect that believed in peaceful coexistence and simple living. The first shaker family to settle in Shaker Heights was Josephine (Theresa) Shriver, who married John Fenton on December 3, 1793. Their first child was born October 12th that year: James Fenton Shriver (born November 3rd). In 1821 cornerback Amos Kendall played for George Washington's team during his visit to Cleveland; he brought some back with him including artifacts from America's capital that still reside at Qwest Park across from FirstEnergy Stadium today. Kendall also donated land for what would become Shaker Heights Cemetery which opened its doors on May 9th of that year! Many other prominent residents have followed throughout history such as industrialist Jethro Gibbs and physician Drury Lane Caldwell Sr., both natives of Independence Township where Shaker Heights now stands. In 1916 Shaerfield High School became available when Euclid High School relocated to Euclid Avenue south of Superior Street . A new library building was completed adjacent to the schoolhouse in 1924 and served asshaken replica (the original being destroyed by fire) until 2005 when it reopened as part of Maplebrook Community Learning Center located off West 127th Street between Third Avenue and Superior Boulevard
