Shaker Heights, Ohio is a town of about 84,000 people located in the Allegheny County region of Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1825 by Congregationalists who called it "Mt. Pleasant." The original Shaker buildings were built on the site of what is now the University of Akron. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location and its close proximity to western manufacturing centers such as Pittsburgh and Youngstown. In 1837, Shaker leaders petitioned United States Congress for land east of the Monongahela River which would become Cleveland. They were successful and received 640 acres (248 hectares). This grant established Shaker Heights as an important center for trade with eastern cities. In 1868, Shaker Heights became part of the new city of Cleveland through annexation by Cleveland from Wayne County. The following year, demolition began on some old shakers buildings to make way for a new city hall and library complex. Work continued until 1893 when all but one building was destroyed in a fire that also damaged many other structures in downtown Cleveland. Only two years later, construction resumed on a larger replacement complex that still stands today – One hundred years after it was first erected! During this time, much progress was made in optical technology including the development of photosensitive films and photography; television sets; lasers; fluorescent lights; air conditioning systems; and car headlights – just to name a few examples. On November 12th, 1918 – eighty-six years after it was first constructed – Shaker Heights’ new City Hall burned down during an evening storm while under renovation. However, despite this tragedy, Mayor John Ahern declared that “Shakers are not extinct” and started plans for another City Hall Complex that would be built on Park Avenue between Euclid Avenue and Superior Street near where current Municipal Tower sits today! Shaker Heights is a town in northwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shaker Heights is named after Shakers, a religious group who lived in 1787 in what is now known as the Township of Shaker Heights. The first post office was established in 1824 and changed its name to Shakerstown in 1828. The community was chartered as a village on November 15, 1868, by commissioners from Canton and other townships within the Shawnee County area and became an incorporated village on December 1, 1870. TheVillage of Springboro located east of present-day Shaker Heights did not incorporate until 1893 following boundary changes made by the Secretary of State for Cook County when that township became part of neighboring Willoughby Township. The Village had many businesses which closed due to competition from larger townships or because those businesses were unable to keep up with technological advances such as radio and television service available through these early decades. However, one business that survived for many years was J & H Chevrolet which continued to be operated out of an old warehouse on Center Avenue until it moved into its current facility at 2257 W Superior Road in 1978. Other local businesses include "The Gopher Pit" restaurant (now defunct), "Pineapple Press" bookstore (now defunct), "Slippery Rock Pharmacy", "Canton Savings Bank", and various convenience stores including Woolworth's store on Euclid Street between Arlington Boulevard and Superior Avenue (now occupied by Marshalls). By 1990 there were only three remaining businesses left within the original boundaries: J & H Chevrolet; Pineapple Press; SlipperyRock Pharmacy - all closed by then. Overall this represents a significant loss for commerce within the Community during this time frame as most local businesses have since relocated or disappeared entirely due to economic decline over time unrelated to internet retailing activities. There has been some resurgence however with two new restaurants opening up since 2000 called Crave Italian Eatery and Johnny Rockets which reopened inside Oneonta Mall later that year after being vacated for several years outside mall boundaries
