Shaker Heights is one of the youngest towns in Mahoning County and was founded on October 25, 1824 by Reverend John Adair and his wife Deborah. The town became a village on December 1, 1846. On November 3rd of that year, the village was merged with neighboring unincorporated communities of Mayfield and Lancaster to form a new city called "Shaker Heights." On November 10th of that year, the city was renamed "Johnstown" after its first mayor. The history of Shaker Heights can be traced back to 1824 when Reverend John Adair and his wife Deborah decided to establish a new settlement in what is now Mahoning County in order to promote religious revivalism among Quakers who were then scattered throughout western Pennsylvania and into Maryland. The couple's goal was to create an inclusive community where all cultures could mix without fear of discrimination or persecution from other groups. Reverend Adair served as both church leader and community organizer for the nascent town until he passed away in 1829. His widow continued to lead the community until her death in 1830. On October 25th of that year (1824), Revd John Addai & 2 daughters set out from their home near Philadelphia for what would become Shaker Heights with just 15 people total including themselves & 2 dogs! Many of these pioneer pastors turned their homes into meeting places for their congregations where they could share news, answer questions about religion and watch sermon videos together while socializing outside the house or within if there were enough chairs available inside – similar to how we currently do things at churches across America today! Shaker Heights is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Shaker" comes from the Pequot Tribe and "HeIGHTS" are terms for high ground or plateau in general. Shaker Heights began as a small farming community located on high ground about 12 miles northwest of downtown Dayton. In 1855, John Denny bought 500 acres (2 km²) of land in what is now Shaker Heights and founded the first Shaker Village there. The village became an incorporated town on March 14, 1868. On February 17, 1870, John Denny's son-in-law James Atherton purchased 1,200 acres (500 km²) of land east of Dayton and built Atherton Park thereon which eventually became Nationwide Children's Hospital. The industry that first attracted settlers to Shaker Heights was agriculture; however, by 1860 meatpacking had become an important part of the community's economy with processing plants developing near mile marker 184 on I-75.
