In 1882, Shaker Heights, Ohio was founded by the Shakers. The family that founded Shaker Heights were very religious and wanted to create a place where people could come together to worship God. They also wanted to create a community that would be healthy and happy. The first thing they did was they built a hospital. This helped make Shaker Heights a hub for medicine in the area. They also started to build schools and other types of buildings. After awhile, they realized that they needed more space so they started building another hospital. This time, they used the money from the first hospital to build a much larger one. It became known as the Medical Center of Shaker Heights which still stands today! Eventually, the family decided that they didn’t need all of this space so they sold some of it off and moved into their current house on Summit Drive in 1909. This house is now known as House #1! Over time, House #1 has been passed down through several families who have lived in it. In 1979, it was purchased by Milton Hershey who kept it until 2007 when he sold it back to the original owner who currently live in it!

Shaker Heights is a town in Stark County, Ohio., United States. The population was 5,026 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Shaker Heights formed as a village on the west side of Shaker Lake in 1811 from the remnants of what was once an extensive and powerful Indian resistance movement against English colonial rule in Western New York. The first meeting for Shakertown took place on October 10, 1811. In 1815, when the original Shakers moved to their new home on Beaver Creek in western Strongsville Township, they also established a school and church there. In 1830, when Shaker Heights became a town, it retained its autonomy and voted to secede from Strongsville Township; however, this did not happen until 1875. The first store opened in 1796 by Ebenezer Farnsworth and his son Nathan under license from Governor John Langdon of Pennsylvania. By 1800 there were ten stores open in Stark County with over $500 worth of merchandise sold each day! The Farnsworth family continue to own and operate one store until their death in 1919 (the last store closed in 1961). A mill was started here around 1800 by Nicholas Lyon but it failed due to low water pressure and finally shut down about 1850. A post office called "Shake" was opened here on November 12th, 1821 by Hiram Bingham with Wm Higginson as Postmaster because no one else wanted to take responsibility for delivering mail! One year later prospered an addition to the office: "Hancock". This name change followed elections held that year which resulted Nathaniel Hawthorne becoming Town Clerk after winning an election against incumbent Thos Biddleman - who had been elected Collector 2 years earlier! Hancock served through 1840 when he resigned because of health concerns related to alcoholism; his successor continued under that name until 1865 when George Washington Hancock assumed office after winning an election against incumbent Thos Biddleman again! In 1860 Samuel Tilden became Ulysses S Grant’s running mate during his unsuccessful campaign for President and Shaker Heights played a significant role within Grant’s victory that year! Tilden donated land near Main Street & High Street (now University Circle) so that numerous homes could be built following America's largest slave auction ever held at Government House only two miles away – which generated much publicity for the community including local newspaper articles!. When Grant returned home after his successful trip abroad he organized a public dinner at His Majestic Mansion attended by many dignitaries including Ulysses S Grant himself!!! Many residents would follow him into politics or business thereafter including future Presidents Woodrow Wilson (who also grew up here), Franklin D Roosevelt (president 1929-1933), Harry Truman (vice president 1945-1949) etc… Resting today besideand acrossfromGrantHouseiteremainsoneofAmerica'slargestandmostfamous neighborhoods!!
