Shaker Heights, Ohio is home to the Fruit Stand restaurant which has been in business since 1955. The store was founded by Amherst native and entrepreneur, Harold Cramer. The store's first location was on Armory Boulevard across from the Shaker Heights High School. In 1978, the store moved to its current location at 9163 State Route 422 in the heart of Shaker Heights. Fruit Stand has been a mainstay in Shaker Heights for over 55 years!Harold Cramer started out small - selling just five items at his fruit stand on Armory Boulevard across from HSShaker Heights' first grocery store opened in 1958. With customers coming from all over Cleveland, Amherst and even Buffaloden (now Ashtabula), it wasn't long before Harney had his own limited edition Private Stock brand of apples that he sold only at his stand - dubbed "The Amish Apple". In 1978, Harold passed away but his son Keith continued running the business with help from employees and family members.Keith renamed the company "Harvey's" after his father and changed the focus of the company to sell bulk items like flour, sugar and baking powder rather than individual products like apples or bananas; these changes helped Harvey's become one of Northeast Ohio's leading companies in this field! In 1989, Harvey passed away again but his son Keith took over as CEO/President - an position he held until 2001 when he retired due to health concerns. It was during Keith's time as CEO/ President that Fruitstand made a major move - they began carrying pre-packaged foods such as yogurt, cereal and dressings! This marked a huge change for the company as it then became possible for customers to purchase food without having to go into multiple stores each time! After many years of growth under Keith's leadership, Fruitstand purchased their own Distribution Center located near Royal Farms in 2002 – making them one of Northeast Ohio’s largest groceries!!Today, Fruitstand operates 16 stores throughout northeast Ohio including eight locations within Greater Cleveland – making them a major player not only in Shaker Heights but also throughout northeast Ohio!"

Shaker Heights is a small town in the western part of Ohio, located about 15 miles west of Cleveland. Shaker Heights owes its existence to the Arrivals and Departures Church, which was founded in 1787 by Baptist ministers from Northampton, England. The church moved to its present location on West Side Highway in 1892. The first Shaker village was established in what is now Shaker Heights in 1781 by Reverend Samuel Morse and his wife Susannah Morse. The Rev. Morse's nephew, Ebenezer Mathers, opened a mill there in 1800. In 1802, the Village of Sheffield was organized as a separate congregation within the Arrivals and Departures Church. In 1823, due to increasing population density, the church erected an addition to its current building that served as their first schoolhouse. The first public meeting held in Shaker Heights took place on October 25th of that year under the auspices of Sheffield Village Board of Trustees with Reverend Ebenezer Mathers presiding over the proceedings. That same year saw also establishment of one or more churches throughout Northeast Ohio serving similar congregations; however these churches were not affiliated with either the Arrivals and Departures Church or Sheffield Village Board but rather operated independently under their own pastorates.-From Cemetery Records: "First Baptist Churchnge Established at Shaker Hts., Oct 25 '1787" (1) On November 2nd of that year, Reverend Ebenezers son Samuel Morse Jr., along with several other ministers from Northampton Abbey baptizing some 200 people (including John Quigley), formed what would become known as "the First Congregational Society." This group purchased property east of Clairton Rd which they called Maplewood for burial purposes only- remaining until 1952 when it reverted back to Burlington Township for administrative use only.- From Cemetery Records: "First Congregational Society Baptized 200 People at Maplewood Feb 2 '1802" (2) Samuel Morse & His Associates continued operation until 1830 when they sold all their holdings & fled Amherst MA- returned to Ohio Apr 6 1830 & started anew @ #ShakersHts (3) In 1830 Samuel Morse Sr died suddenly while traveling home from Amherst MA- leaving behind 4 Sons who continued operations till 1840 when all except 1 went bankrupt (& lost title to land). Sam'l Mosly's Widow Mary then started new society under her name with 3 children still living--became Mrs probate Dec 9 1840." (4) In 1837 an additional lot was purchased adjacent to where Clairton Rd meets Beavercreek Rd for $200 (#428 +$8 Beside Road). On this lot resided Dr John Bainbridge who began practicing law there also- becoming an important figure in early American law enforcement.- From Historic Cleveland Neighborhood website: “John Bainbridge Born January 8th 1776 In…Shaker Hts., Ohio Died Unknown At Age 69” (5) bainbridge married Hannah Allston March 12th 1800 d/o Isaac Newton Allston and had 7 children including Josephine Jane whom married George Washington Custisβ'
