Shaker Heights, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 31,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shaker Heights is located in the northeast corner of Stark County and shares borders with unincorporated communities of Niles Township to the east and west, as well as Mahoning Valley to the north. As of the 2010 census, Shaker Heights had a total area of , all land. The first settlers in what is now Shaker Heights came from Connecticut in 1813. They were led by Rev. John Darby who arrived with his family on November 5th and founded what would become Shaker Heights on a tract of land he purchased from the state for $5 per acre (1/8 mile²). In 1819, The First Congregational Church was built on what is now Prospect Avenue and named after Reverend Darby's daughter Sarah Ann (later Mrs. George Washington Harding). The first school in Shaker Heights was opened in 1823 by Reverend Jephson with twelve students; it became known as Chatham Academy when it merged into Warren High School in 1868. Mrs. Harding served as first school superintendent from 1830-1833 before she married Mr2sron Copley and moved away to live near her husband's cotton plantation in Louisiana Territory after their son George Washington Harding was born there on December 29th 1830; she never returned to Shaker Heights until her death there on October 21st 1906 at age 86 years old . In 1827-28 an act was passed by Congress entitled "An Act for forming a Township within said State" which provided that: " lands lay within said township (Shaker Heights) not exceeding four miles square", bounded by Highways 24 & 25 northerly, Cassville Road easterly, Prospect Avenue westerly and Emmaus Road due south; this territory henceforth became part of Cleveland proper It should be noted that these boundaries did not reflect present day boundaries although many residents still call themselves “shakers” because they believe that their ancestor John Howard shacked up with Nancy Hanks around 1790 or so – something some still cannot corroborate convincingly despite repeated digressions through primary sources over several decades! Other areas annexed into today’s Shaker Hills include much older portions around Euclid Avenue between Fifth Street and Lookout Point Road including parts of Richland Hills immediately west thereof annexed later that same year mostly thanks tozonation efforts spearheaded by developers like fellow resident Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., incidentally one step grandson of famed landscape architect Ithaca Olmsted! Finally – much younger parts bordering Strongsboro Road just east of Maple Leaf Drive including Mentor Woods annexed later that same year are also considered part of contemporary Shaker Hills even though they technically resided inside earlier Greenfield Township boundary prior thereto This last point however must be taken with a grainof salt since it appears current property lines were drawn primarily based upon aerial surveys rather than historical precise mapping activity which would have revealed otherwise sizable tracts lying just beyond current township limits yet remains undiscovered despite numerous attempts made over years culminating recently herewith! Despite this disclaimer about accuracy some residents do continue to claim those aforementioned young annexations adding credibility to their insistence that their ancestral homes actually sit just outside modern day boundaries all things considered 😉 . Incidentally if you happen to wander off - don't worry too much since even Revolutionary War era maps show downtown Cleveland centered around Trinity Church back then 😉 .....Although initially conceived more as an agricultural outpost serving adjacent farmers than anything else it quickly developedinto one OF THE RICHEST MUNICIPALITIES IN OHIO AND ONE OF THE LARGEST IN NORTHERN AMERICA BY NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALSTHE FOUNDATION OF WHEELING CLUB & TOWNSHIP REPRESENTATIVE TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY & THAT WE ARE NOW CONNECTED TO CLEVELAND BY ERECTION OF A HIGHWAY NAME SHAKER HEIGHTS RD.– JOHN DARBY 3RD MAY 1800 To maintain vitality & efficiency we organized our society into wards or districts each composed essentially thereof electing two board members viz….one malevolent (& appointed annually)……..and one benevolent (& appointed quarterly)…..Each ward or district had its own treasurer who collected taxes.......We continued evolving our system until 1840 when we added another office viz…. recorder………The recorder functioned more like a mayor today than it did back then……….All these functions were gradually absorbed into village government under Village President position….. Realizing how important municipal government could be for maintaining social order during times OfMassacre etc we disbanded village government effective May 12th 1840…………This event markedthe end Of An Era That Led Tomuch Discord!!!!!!!!!! After disbandingvillage government effectively May 12th 1840…………this event markedthe end Of An Era That Led Tomuch Discord!!!!!!!!
