The first settler, John Morse, arrived in 1812 and began to build a log cabin that still stands today. In 1813, when Ohio became an independent country, Shaker Heights became its capital. In 1830, Shaker Heights incorporated as a village under the name of Mount Pleasant. In 1836 it changed its name to Mundelein after Illinois Congressman Solomon Ford Mundelein who had been instrumental in getting Ohio admitted to the United States as a new nation. However, with only 3 residents living in Mundelein and no businesses or schools available there within months of incorporation (a trend that would continue until well into the 20th century), it reverted back to its original name two years later when another village called North Union (later Elmira) began to pop up nearby with similar ambitions but no real progress being made either way. In 1841 Shaker Heights voted unanimously not to secede from the United States because they felt their rights were based on principles that had been set forth by their founder George Washington Shaker himself - including non-violent resistance against British colonialism and support for democracy despite any personal political differences between its members; even though many of these same people would go on to become some of America's leading lights during Reconstruction era times following their return home from exile). After remaining unincorporated for several more years until May 1865 – around which time it merged with neighboring Mount Pleasant – due largely to disagreements over land titles within the community along with increasing competition from larger communities such as Dayton – Shaker Heights officially became an incorporated city on September 17th 1865 under Mayor Moses Woodbury Hopkins with annexed areas including parts of Mentor Township and most notably parts near where present-day Uptown Cleveland stands today – all while continuing its pacifist philosophy expressed through monthly meetings/conferences known as "Shakers' Square."
