The Shaker Heights Rifle Company was formed in 1892 and until 1898 it was known as the Dayton Rifle Company. The company was reorganized in 1898 as the Dayton Rifle and Machine Gun Company, or the DREC for short. The name “DREC” came from a rifle design by George Washington Carver that had been turned into a machine gun. In 1907, when the company changed its name to the Dayton Hammer & Wrench Corporation, hammer manufacture became an important part of the company’s business. In 1911, John Congdon joined DREC as its first president and he served in this position until his death in 1932. Under Congdon’s guidance, DREC grew to become one of Ohio’s leading hammer companies. In 1916, Congdon donatedhammermaking equipment to Ohio State University (OSU) so that students could study shotgun hammers under his guidance. AfterCongdon’s death, OSU continued to use his equipment for research purposes and eventually made Hammer Research Center available for public use.today). Northup later moved away but left behind two small cemeteries - one near present day Parma Avenue and one off Wexford Avenue - which are still used today as sites for holiday services and picnics. In 1815, Revolutions began throughout Europe and America; however, these events did not have an impact on Shaker Heights because President James Kapp said at that time "the people hereabouts are more tranquility minded than elsewhere".
