In 1847, Shaker Heights residents John C. Frick and his wife Rebecca erected a log cabin on the site of what is now the current John F. Kennedy Elementary School. The couple named their new home "The Riflemans" in honor of their two shotguns they had bought from Captain Benjamin Franklin Butler, an early resident of the town. In 1850, Frick and his wife moved to a larger house on the same lot that later became Fairmont State University. There he started selling rifles and shotguns to people throughout the area. By 1853, Frick was making $2 per week from sales alone. In 1854, Frick met James Hickey at a gun show in Akron and became interested in purchasing firearms for use by local militias against Indian attacks. Hickey agreed to sell him pistols for $5 each when he first exhibited them at a rifle show organized by The Arion Club in Cleveland four months later. From this beginning, handguns like revolvers would be called "Hickey Guns." Frick's success led him to open his own store in Shaker Heights in 1859 where he continued selling firearms until 1861 when Ohio passed its state constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote (they were not allowed to own guns). After Ohio's secession from the Union, Frick closed his store and left Ohio for good. He never returned again and died three years later without ever having regained possession of his business or home within Shaker Heights limits

The first settler in what is now Shaker Heights was George Ramsey and his family. In 1824, Reverend Cyrus Bowles arrived from Boston with about 100 followers and built the first log house on what is now Prospect Avenue. The community grew rapidly due to its location near the new Erie Canal and its easy access to mills and other businesses. In 1830, Rev. Bowles erected the first schoolhouse in what is now Shaker Heights; it served as both a home teaching school and an early hospital. By 1835, there were over 200 residents living in Shaker Heights proper and 20 miles (32 km) away at Bedford Township. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from Shaker Heights sided with the Union side; including General George Armstrong Custer who fought in battle at Delaware Junction near present-day Euclid Avenue and West 117th Street on April 25, 1862. Many of those living within 2 miles (3 km) of Battle Creek National Battlefield participated in this hostilities which also destroyed much of their homes: according to historian Donald Dickey Jr., "More than one-third of all residences within two miles [3 km] of Battle Creek were either destroyed or seriously damaged by Confederate shelling." In 1865, when Reconstruction ended following America's secession from the Union, most Georgians decided that they did not want any part of this new country - so few remained within central Ohio after 1865 when Reconstruction officially ended four years later on November 15th 1865 under General Ulysses S Grant's presidency.) Although some people returned to live in Shaker Heights during this time period – such as Myron Edgar Stroud – most residents left after becoming openly Republican during Reconstruction period which saw harsh treatment for black Americans throughout Northern states following civil rights movement spearheaded by then President Abraham Lincolnanism while Southern states largely ignored these events.– Mayor Donny Schmitt related that "the great majority’s departure took place before or during World War I." Many businesses closed down during Prohibition era while others passed through numerous ownership changes until it closed operations entirely around 1925.— One business that failed during prohibition Era was Diamond Horseshoe Saloon located on Bellefontaine Road NW which also became known as “The Bouncing Betty” because shoes would bounce off its door.— A popularuintly sold ice cream sandwich called “Sugar Bear” remain popular today at various locations throughout Northeast Ohio.—A variety store called Joesway opened up near Bellefontaine Road almost immediately after prohibition enforcement began targeting speakeasy operators.— Another business which failedduring prohibition ERA was Cycle Barn located at Richmond Road NE which caught fire shortly after opening.— Another unsuccessful operation during Prohibition era was drug store operated by Harry Caldwell located at 71st Street between Euclid Avenueand Brookline Boulevard— After prohibition repealed alcohol sales resumed just east of current day Maplewood Drive .)
