Shaker Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,953 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Greater Cleveland after Cleveland. Shaker Heights is located on the border of Cleveland and Akron. Shaker Heights began as a small settlement on the east side of what is now downtown Shaker Heights, founded by Methodists in 1814. The first post office was established in 1816 and became known as "New Market." In 1821, Shaker Heights incorporated as a town under the name of "Beacon Hill". The township's first mayor was John Denton. The first justice of the peace was Samuel Holcombe. In 1826, Beechcroft Township merged into Shaker Heights Township; but Beechcroft's citizens continued to form their own committee for local government within their new township until 1830 when they raised money to purchase land from the Scioto Company and incorporate as a village called Beacon Hill Village (later renamed Beacon Township). In 1830–31, George Washington Carver moved to Shaker Heights from Dayton and started his carpenter shop there with his son George Washington Carver Jr.. One hundred years later, one of Ohio's most famous entrepreneurs and philanthropists – Clifford Berry – started his own business here too. In 1957–58, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) services were added to Shaker Hills Hospital which made it possible for families living near heavy industrial areas such as Proctor & Gamble plants or other large hospitals to have their infants seen by specialist physicians at this facility instead of being sent home with less than ideal results from traditional obstetric care facilities that were then often unlicensed or inadequately trained personnel who did not have experience caring for premature babies during those early stages of life. This innovation has continue down through time and currently provides overnight NICUs service statewide including via Telemetry which allows these babies to be monitored remotely without having any laying or breastfeeding arrangements made with their parents/caregivers while they are being cared for at home by our specially trained staff members.) Shaker Heights is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The town was founded by Methodists in 1811 and derives its name from Shakers, a religious sect who fled England for North America in 1786. The first permanent settler in what would become Shaker Heights was Isaac Dickenson in 1811. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now the University Circle shopping center. In 1813, he married Martha Perks and started to build a home on this site which they named "Nova." They had six children: three girls and three boys. In 1830, John Wesley Shriver moved to Cleveland with his family from Westfield, Massachusetts and began preaching at Mount Carmel Baptist Church (now Mount Carmel United Methodist Church). In 1831 he purchased land east of present-day Market Street along High Street for $1 per acre (the price then doubled when Ohio became a state). He renamed it Shaker Heights after his own religious sect, the Shakers. By 1840 there were over 100 members living in Shaker Heights . On May 15th of that year Reverend George Hoadley organized what would become known as First Congregational church here with seventy-six member families under one roof for worshiping Almighty God according to their own interpretation of His Word (Mark 7:19). Reverend Hoadley left Shaker Heights after only four years due to financial difficulties; however his legacy lives on through First Congregational services being offered every Saturday morning at 8am at Evergreen PresbyterianChurch across the street from KFCLand until recently (KFCLand closed in 2006). There are also small groups affiliated with First Congregationalism located throughout Northeast Ohio including Greater Akron, Toledo, Cuyahoga Falls/New Castle/Milford Township etc... Reverend Hoadley's wife Esther continued ministering until her death many years later in 1888 aged 92 years old! Reverend Hoadley's daughter Rhoda served as our current Pastor emeritus during her mother's lifetime! Shaker Heights grew rapidly during its early days due to its close proximity to Cleveland and new manufacturing jobs opportunities within miles of where people lived and worked. The first school opened here on Marbury Road just north ofpresent day High School in 1834 taught grades 1-8 while classes were held out of sessions at home because there wasn't enough space available inside High School itself! This made possible an early formative period where young adults learned how to read and write while still living among their peers; this experience helped shape future leaders such as Woodrow Wilson who attended Flowery Hill Academy before attending Princeton University! With more than 100 residents by 1850 it was clear that something special existed here which led Governor Andrew Johnson to appoint an inquiry committee chaired by Judge John Ligon into shakierights' affairs seeking solutions including land reclamation and better transportation options- revealing evidence that shakierights had potential great things ahead! The post office designation arrived here soon afterwards from Nortonville near today's Lucasfilm Ltd.. Nortonville was originally called Newington but changed hands several times so it got its current name - Nortonville because General James Gouverneur Norton leadership felt like he needed protection against Indian attacks even though no real attacks ever took place! The first postmaster general served under George Washington during the American Revolution; hence General James Gouverneur Norton should be considered one of America's very first postmasters general ! Although most mail went through Cincinnati proper until 1861 when all U S Postal Service functions were transferred outside Washington D C due to war efforts we did receive some official correspondence from Great Britain via Liverpoolammers Bay between 1795-1801 inclusive despite not having any military engagement or hostilities taking place within our borders!!
