He was followed by other Englishmen, among them John Nickles and his son-in-law Benjamin Butler. They began buying land east of Lake Erie for farming purposes and built charters granting themselves proprietary rights to various parcels of land within what are today eastern Cleveland and northwestern Akron. In 1812, Meetinghouse Road became known as part of Indian Territory when all British possessions east of the Allegheny Mountains were ceded to Ulysses S Grant during peace negotiations following the War of 1812. When America gained independence from Great Britain, local leaders decided it would be better if they renamed their town after American heroes such as George Washington or Christopher Columbus who had helped make America great: William Pitt (the Elder),hackneye Weedon (the Younger), Nicholas Huygens (New Netherland), James Kappner (Ohio Company) etc., but no one came up with a good idea for an initial name so they just called their town "Shakers".
