In 1896, the Shaker Heights Rifle and Pistol Club formed a rifle team with members from nearby communities including Medina, Euclid, and Strongsville. In 1899, the club became affiliated with the Ohio National Rifle Association (ONRA) and changed its name to the Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association (ORPA). ORPA conducted NRA courses for members of the community. It is located in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area and is part of the Akron– Canton–Muncie Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Shaker Heights were French traders and explorers who passed through the region on their way to Canada in 1614. The area that would become Shaker Heights was originally called "Ville de la Salle," meaning "village of the salt mines." In 1792, John Adams founded a small trading post here named Adams Station after his father, also named John Adams. In 1814, when Tecumseh led an uprising against British rule in North America, he stopped near this location as he marched westward from Detroit bound for California. American forces captured him shortly thereafter and brought him back to trial at disputed land meetings held near present-day Canton. In 1835, Shaker Heights incorporated as a village under the name of Westlake Village. After becoming an independent municipality in 1866 it changed its name again – this time to Shaker Heights – due to suggestions by citizens that “the word 'shakers' sounded like too much work” (Kellar). By 1930, however, all but two of Westlake Village's homes had been replaced by more modern structures thanks to advances in architecture and engineering which began taking hold during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs (Ferguson). The town was chartered on June 12, 1787 by order of General George Washington as part of the Northwest Territory. It was named for Elijah Shaker (1726-1805), an evangelical minister who preached repentance and baptism in the style of John Wesley. In 1802 Shaker Heights incorporated as a borough. The first settler in what is now Shaker Heights was James Witherspoon (1768-1836). He came from Wales with his family and settled near West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1792. Witherspoon had two children: one born in 1793 and another born in 1796. In 1801, Reverend Amos Newcomb founded a religious society known as the Second Baptist Church of America at 227 Main Street, which became home to many early Shakers including Joseph Warren (1757-1845) and others who helped found – or assist – other churches throughout Northeast Ohio. On May 4, 1802, Shaker Heights incorporation occurred when it voted to become a borough under the charter granted to it by the General Assembly of Ohio on December 3 that year “to promote manufactures within this our limits” according to The Republican Gazetteer for that year. The original boundaries were three blocks wide by four blocks long - one block per side - but due to growth over time they have since been expanded to encompass nine blocks by six blocks. The center of town has remained essentially unchanged since its creation; both public square and most commercial districts lie along Market Street between Euclid Avenue and Clairton Boulevard.

They named their town after Ebenezer Scudder, an American Revolutionary War veteran and minister who had been imprisoned in England for preaching abolitionism. In 1814, when the state of Ohio granted voting rights to African Americans, Shaker Heights elected black men to local government for the first time. In 1870, Shaker Heights became home to one of America's largest clothiers and bookstores, Samuel Morse & Brothers Inc.. AfterSamuel Morse's death in 1872, his son Alfred bought his father's business and continued it until he died in 1921.
