Shaker Heights, Ohio is a community located in the southeastern corner of Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 22,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Shaker settlers in what would become Shaker Heights arrived in 1788 and named their community after Mount Lebanon in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In 1814, with the opening of the Erie Canal and an increase in trade through that route, shakers began moving to what is now Shaker Heights from all over Northeast Ohio. By 1830 there were 329 people living in Shaker Heights – 128 men and 158 women. In 1851, Ohio lawmakers created a township for what was then part of Shaker Heights – one of many such townships established statewide during the early years of statehood. Township status was granted to Shaker Heights on November 3rd, 1855. With its own schoolhouse and government center built around a Presbyterian church (later Baptist), shakers quickly became one ofreetown's most prominent residents and businesses along Euclid Avenue near West Side Highway/Summit Boulevard. During World War II much activity took place within or adjacent to George Mason University as American servicemen prepared for war; however, few members are still alive who lived or worked there prior to that time. Many military veterans returned home after hostilities ceased and Foundations Whittier Concrete Company moved into their old plant building on Clinton-Atherton Road just south of Summit Boulevard when it closed down in 1955 due to lack of demand for concrete products from post-war America

Shaker Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Summit County. The population was 44,752 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Summit County by population. The adjacent villages are Liston, Northside, and Shaker Park. The area that would become Shaker Heights was first settled by English colonists in 1797 as part of what is now Hamilton Township. In 1814, a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries established a small mission called Bethel Hill on a high bluff overlooking the town of Liston to provide religious education to young Indians who were then living near the site. The Mission's primary purpose was to convert these Indians into christians, but it also became an important commercial center due to its location and access to water supplies from two springs located within walking distance of its buildings. In 1835, when Ohio became a state, Cincinnati-based businessman Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased land east of Dayton along with other properties in Summit County for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $). He named his new township after himself – Shaker Heights – because he believed that cultivation could be done only within limits provided by nature. Over time, Forrest expanded his holdings into much of eastern Ohio and created numerous agricultural communities including Mayfield Heights in Cuyahoga County; Oakwood Village west of Cleveland; and Fernley Farms in Grayslake Township south of Cleveland. These towns were all abandoned shortly after their establishment because they lacked support from local governments or businesses which moved away during the Great Migration period when many Americans left agriculture for better jobs opportunities in cities Fernley Farms survived until 1957 when it was sold to Monsanto Company for $2 million dollars (equivalent to $). At this point it had been vacant for more than 50 years and had experienced several thousandDamage over time caused by wind erosion and weathering from storms such as Hurricane Hazel which destroyed most homes nearby in 1954 After some consideration Monsanto decided against purchasing Fernley Farms citing concerns about damage potential should future storms occur In 1956 Shaker Heights voters passed an ordinance establishing zoning guidelines that would prohibit development on residential property adjacent to four public schools which served as boundaries for both ruraland urban neighborhoods within Shaker Heights thereafter known as "the four squares". This ordinance remains oneofthe most restrictive zoning ordinances ever passed in America up until today
Shaker Heights was founded in 1795 by the Religious Society of Friends (RPF). The community became a town in 1811 and a city in 1907. The population of Shaker Heights rose to over 100,000 by the turn of the century, but declined during the Great Depression. Today, Shaker Heights is an ethnically diverse and economically prosperous community with a strong sense of community activism.
