Polk two years earlier. Over time many shops and businesses closed due to economic competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Akron but some stayed open including Wernher von Braun’s rocketship company which manufactured missiles for America’s World War II allies During its heyday before World War II Shaker Heights boasted an enrollment of over 1,000 students at four high schools (Fenway Park High School (1890-1921), Woodland Hills High School (1922-1963), Metropole High School (1964-1975) and Carpentersville High School (1976-1981)) plus numerous additional private schools operated within its boundaries including Our Lady Of Angels Catholic School (founded 1902), Sacred Heart Military Academy/Stritch Institute (1896), Stritch Orphanage/Dowling Home/Home for Incurables no later than 1922) This industrial base declined during much of the 1940s following several waves of Japanese immigration to struggling Midwestern towns during wartime hysteria which created significant demand for labor shortages among munitions manufacturers vital to both sides in World War II In 1948 SHS merged with neighboring Euclid Township providing mutual benefit through agricultural production

One result was that much of the old neighborhood between Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road became rundown and vacant until redevelopment started in earnest in the 1990s and 2000s by area residents, businesses, and local philanthropists under the name "Downtown Shaker Heights."
