Gun targets have been a part of Seven Hills, Ohio culture for over 150 years. The first target was erected in 1837. During the American Revolution, many battles were fought with artillery and pistols. Gun targets became popular during the early 1800s because they could be shot at from a distance and because they were relatively easy to find and shoot. In 1892, a shooting range was built in Seven Hills. This range became known as the “Best in the World” due to its excellent conditions for shooting. It continued to be used by locals and guests alike until it closed in 1978. The last target to be shot at this range was a .22 caliber rifle on July 15th of that year. Today, gun targets are still an important part of Seven Hills history and culture. They can be found throughout town, especially near schools and playgrounds. Some are even made out of wood!

The first gun target in Seven Hills was a blacksmith's shop. The site is now occupied by the Seven Hills Middle School. The first rifle target in the village was a small dark building on the corner of Main and Michigan Streets. This building still stands today, used as a community hall. The second rifle target in Seven Hills was an old ammunition dump at the edge of town. The dump still stands, used as an observation point for snipers during World War II.
Seven Hills is a census-designated place in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name of the town was derived from the seven hills that make up its location: Summit Hill, Darby Hill, Highland Hill, Northfield Hill, Pritchard Hill and Southfield Hills. The first settlers in what would become Seven Hills were David Brown and his family who arrived in 1792. The community became an incorporated village in 1881. It gained city status on November 3 of that year. The first mayor was A.T. Putnam and the first council consisted of twelve members which included five men and five women. On July 5, 1889 Seven Hills got its own fire department which made it one of the few places in Holmes County without one until 1908 when it merged with neighboring Union City to form Oneida Township. In 1916 Seven Hills had its own high school which graduated its first class of seventeen students; however this school closed due to financial problems within a few years and it would not open again until 1954 when it joined nearby Union City High School as part of a larger consolidated district under the leadership of Drue Heckerman who also served as superintendent for both schools for many years after their mergerUntil he retired in 2006 Five Catholic Schools (St Joseph’s Catholic School/Cleveland Heights), St Ignatius Jesuit Preparatory School (Lorain HS) and Our Lady Of Lourdes Academy (Heidelberg HS) all opened within Seven Hills boundaries making Nine Mile Brook Elementary School a closed school since then but still used by Years 4-8 as part of their curriculum
