On July 6, 1813, General James Kapp abandoned his plans for an invasion across Lake Erie and marched instead towards Toledo to relieve American forces besieging that city by British troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Armstrong (1759–1827). On July 12, Kapp reached Toledo and began negotiations for an evacuation with Armstrong which were completed on July 25th when all American forces evacuated without battle or casualties
