Sandusky, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. It is located on the Sandusky Peninsula on Lake Erie between Cleveland and Akron. The first written mention of Sandusky was by George Washington in 1788 when he noted that there was a place called "Sandusky" on the Peninsula. In 1814, Colonel John Cranch discovered coal mining operations near present-day Sandusky while exploring for oil resources in what is now southwestern Ohio. On July 4, 1837, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army burned down part of Fort Wayne as an act of reprisal for Indian raids into Indiana during his campaign against Harrison Gray Otis's forces two years earlier. This event became known as the Battle of Sandusky Heights and helped spur American settlement in this area. In 1850s, Alfred Mudd began developing sandstone quarries at what is now northeast corner of First Street and Euclid Avenue and northwest corner of Race Street/Avenue K near where current day Second Street meets First Street (the site where Mudd's company still operates). By 1860, Mudd had built several large quarries including one known as Piqua Hill which yielded blocks averaging about 38 feet (12 m) wide and up to 6 feet (1 m) high with a thickness of 1 inch (2 mm). In 1865–1866, Gouverneur Morris visited Mudd quarries near present-day downtown Sandusky to inspect their products before deciding not to build a canal through central Ohio because he felt that such a project would be too expensive or disruptive to business patterns within the limestone quarrying industry; however he did recommend that Mudsmen establish schools for children working in their quarries so they could learn about handloading blocks onto ships transporting them back home from abroad. In 1869–1870 Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry moved forces from New York City to participate in Union Army efforts during the American Civil War under General Grant's command against Confederate forces at Bellefontaine Mills; aftermath saw an increase in smuggling operations along both sides of the river due to increased lawlessness following Union victory but also an influx of new immigrants who were drawn to opportunities available within newly freed America following emancipation – many Germans –many coming through Cincinnati via Piqua Hill Quarry; those migrants soon started referring to themselves as "Ohioans." During World War I (), various munitions plants were established around town by entrepreneurs like Orville Wright Sr., Eli Whitney Jr., Wernher von Braun et al.; these sites included Noida Arsenal Ammunition Plant (now part of Crosstown Engineering), Dayton Arsenal Machine Gun Factory #7(now part Of Huntington Ingalls Industries), Thornycroft Arsenal Ammunition Plant #1(now part Decatur Grumman AG), Western Reserve Chemical Plant #2( later Lorillard Co.), United States Rubber Company[3][4], US Steel Corporation[5] – among others - all contributing significantly to Allied victory over Nazi Germany despite heavy German resistance throughout much or allof centralOhio during World War II The once thriving commercial district adjacent downtown today has largely been replaced by residential areas since then but some remnants can still be found including parts offold Second St between Euclid Ave./First Ave./Race St/Avenue K & Third Ave./Euclid Ave./First Ave., former US Rubber Company building currently occupied by University Hospitals Case Medical Center
