Bullets have a long and varied history in Sandusky, Ohio. From the early days of firearms to the present day, bullets have played an important role in both local and national conflicts. Sandusky’s proximity to Cincinnati makes it an ideal place for ammunition production. In 1796, a group of colonists from Cincinnati founded the First National Bank in town. The bank became one of the lead institutions in downtown Dayton, which was then the capital of Northwest Ohio. The city’s growth led to increased demand for ammunition and other military supplies, which prompted James Winchester to establish his rifle company there in 1828. Winchester continued manufacturing rifles and shotguns here until 1888 when he relocated his operations to Springfield, Massachusetts. At that point, American firearms manufacture shifted from handguns (primarily Model 1848 revolvers) to rifles and shotguns. American Rifle Company continued producing pistols here until 1916 when it merged with Colt Firearms Company to form Colt-American Arms Company. Here too guns were produced primarily for hunting and target shooting – not for combat use like during World War II or today’s shootings. In 1921 Colt-American ArmsCompany merged with Remington Arms Corporation to form Remington Rand Ammunition Corporation (later ArmaLite). Under this merger Americans began importing arms grade ammunition from Europe at bargain prices due to wartime restrictions on munitions exports. This practice lasted through World War II before being discontinued following the war’s end; however, some supply lines did remain open until after 1945 because of post-war global shortages of munitions products (Galloway 1954). In 1948 Remington Rand Limited merged with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., forming Brown & Williamson Ammo Incorporated (later Berger Bullets). Sandusky, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio. It is located on the Scioto River, about 20 miles north of Cleveland and 15 miles south of Akron. The population was 4,454 at the 2010 census. The Sandusky Area School District No. 2 was founded in 1892 by Reverend James W. Buell and served students from sandusky village until 1915 when it became part of the Sandusky Township School District No. 1. In 1957, the district merged with township to form the present school district which continues to serve students from Sandusky village through Doomstead Township and then to its current boundaries including parts of Summit Heights and Wood Dale townships as well as parts of Scioto Valley Village (formerly Westlake). In 1924, John Fenton began developing what would become known as "Sandusky Hills" northwest of town on land he had purchased from Moses Potter for $1,000. The resort featured a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools and other amenities for residents and their guests during what would be called "the golden age" of resorts in Northern Ohio. By 1935-36, Fenton had developed an additional 7 acres within what is now the limits of Doomstead Township that would become known as "Fenton's Forest." In 1951-1952owment plans were filed with the state government by local businessmen Lewis Jaffe and Sidney Cookman seeking permission to build a new high school east off US 36 just outside Sandusky proper limits adjacent to their businesses - this so called "campus project". On July 9th 1952 both men were fatally shot while attending an open house for what turned out to be a civic organization meeting at local high school auditorium; no one has been charged with any crime in connection with either murder but ensuing public outcry led to passage by state legislators (amended law #5) authorizing construction without first obtaining prior consent from schools superintendent John Gorman who staunchly opposed any campus development within township boundaries (this law still applies today although all campuses are now operated by separate districts). Construction on High School East began on October 15th 1952 under authority granted by law #5; however due to lack of finances local officials shelved further plans indefinitely until spring 1953 when donations finally arrived enough for final demolition/construction costs associated with larger project which included addition/extension of gymnasiums/multipurpose rooms/amenities & parking garage etc not originally envisaged or contemplated in original donation plans - this resulting in now world famous "Sandusky High" which stands today as one half restored former brick high school building complete with original wood frame architecture & belltower along w wisconsin Ave between First Street & Second Street = once again THE CENTER OF COMMUNICATION FOR SANDUSKY COUNTY!
