Sandusky, Ohio is a small town in Greene County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Sandusky were farmers who arrived in 1796. By 1800, there were three stores and sixteen households in the town. In 1814, a post office was established and by 1830 it had twelve residents. The first school was built in 1828 and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of money. A new school was built and opened in 1830 by Reverend Amos Kendall of Portsmouth, New York. The original building still stands today as part of the Sandusky Historical Society Museum. In 1839, a canal was built through Sandusky and commerce began to increase because of it. In 1853, sandstone quarrying began and soon there were two flour mills operating in town; one on Elm Street and one on High Street. Manufacturing became more important after World War II when production increased for products such as paper cups and plastic bottles because of the demand for aluminum during that time period In 1957, the steel company ArcelorMittal bought a controlling interest in Jardine Rubber & Plastic which made sandpaper products such as car parts A new plant was started up near uniontown (now Cadmium) to produce ceramic tiles making sandusky into an important ceramic tile producer until about 1978 when local production ended due to budget cuts at ArcelorMittal
