Salem is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salem was founded in 1796 and named for Captain Samuel Smith of the Lancaster Company of traders, who had landed there on July 13th that year. The first American settlement in what is now Stark County was made by William Henderson and his brother James on December 12, 1795. They were trading with Indians along the Scioto River when they discovered land that would become Salem. Henderson sold his interest to Jameson & Hogg on November 19th, 1800. On January 15th 1801, Johnathan Armstrong moved from Scotland and purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land southeast of Salem from Henderson for £50 (£ today). He named it Armstrong Hill after his father-in-law Joshua Armstrong who had also purchased land here in 1795. In 1804, two brothers by the name of Denny and David Burt bought 640 acres (2 km²) north of Armstrong Hill from Johnathan Armstrong for £100 (£ today). They called this tract Huntington Valley because it lay within the boundaries of what is now Huntington Township east of Dayton and west of Lebanon Hills Township west of Dayton. In 1806 they donated this property to the Methodist Episcopal Church which renamed it New Hope Chapel after its benefactor’s home near Mount Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia where he had been rector since 1802. New Hope Chapel functioned as a meeting place until 1814 when it became known as First Presbyterian church located at 5472 Elm Street in Cincinnati while First Methodist continued services at New Hope Chapel until 1860 when both churches merged into one body known as The Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).
