After hostilities ended in 1918, many businesses closed or went out of business because of the high cost of post-war reconstruction efforts. However, some large enterprises such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Pepsi-Cola Corporation and General Electric continued operations until they merged into other companies during the 1970s and 1980s recession period. In addition to its economic contributions to society throughout its history, Salem is also known for its unique architecture which includes landmark buildings such as the State Capitol (1819), Central High School (1892), Ford Motor Company Factory (1911) and First National Bank building (1920).
