The history of Salem, Ohio is reflective of the American West. It was founded in 1787 by General George Washington and Major Jacob Frye as a farming community near Cincinnati. The area became a key stop on the Underground Railroad because of its location at the intersection of three major routes. In 1815, Salem was renamed "Salem Village" in honor of Josiah Quincy, then-Governor of Massachusetts. For many years, Salem was an important hub for trade and transportation in the region. In 1952, after being donated to the city by developer and philanthropist Lewis Hine, Salem's first gun Target opened its doors. The target range has been a popular tourist attraction ever since. Today, it remains one of the most popular shooting destinations in town. Salem, Ohio is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,257 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Summit County. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and explorer Pierre Dorion in 1621 and Jesuit missionary Francisco Xavier in 1624. The Dutch founded Fort Orange on the Saline River in 1714 and made Salem their trading post with fur traders from Quebec City. English settlers began arriving in large numbers during the late 18th century, lured by land grants and mineral rights that were offered for settlement near Cincinnati. In 1792, General George Washington visited Salem while on his way to battle the British at Yorktown; he ordered Colonel John Beveridge to plant a crossroads here as an example of how America should be ruled. In 1800, Salem became part of Miami Township when it was organized out of parts of Hardin and Warren counties. In 1802, its own government was established with a mayor and five trustees who had authority over education, public works, sanitary conditions, municipal elections and boundary changes. A courthouse was built in 1813 but it burned down within six months due to termites (a common problem at that time). During Prohibition (1923-29), Salem saw its most active drinking season ever with more than 1 million passengers passing through its ports for beer smuggling purposes. According to the2010 US Census,[1] there are 9,257 people living in Salem proper (the incorporated town), 3 unincorporated areas (Ellettsville Township including Ellettsville Landing; Mount Gilead; Northport Landing) combined with 2 nearby villages: Bedford Village (northwest corner of Perry Avenue & Elm Street) [2] and Wellington Village west of I-71 exit #4 about midway between Bedford Village & Elm Street [3]. The total population density is 511 people per square mile (193/km²). There are no homes located within city limits or outside any incorporated area – all dwellings are inside city boundaries except Elletttville Landing which is outside city limits altogether because it lies along a private waterway which serves as their only connection withriver[4]. Salem was founded in 1795 by the Reverend Samuel Adams and his wife, Judith. TheAdams moved to Salem from Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1797. The town quickly grew and by 1800 had a population of over 100 residents. In 1812, the first general store in Salem was opened. In 1814, Salem became a part of the United States. The town experienced great growth during the 19th century as it became a center for education and commerce. Many famous people were born or died here including Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt. In 1847, Salem became the capital of Ohio after becoming statehoods 22nd state on November 2nd that year. During World War II, Salem played an important role as an airbase for the United States Air Force’s Ninth Air Force which operated out of Seymour Johnson Airport until 1951 when it closed down due to budget cuts. Today there are few visible reminders of this time but many businesses still remain from that era such as Sam Adams Brewery which is open today and served beer until 1971 before switching to wine
Salem was founded by the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1820. The town was renamed Salem in 1837 after the British burned down a building there. In 1851, Salem became the capital of Ohio and within six years had a population of 10,000. The city's first hospital opened in 1853 and by 1865 it had 14 buildings. In 1907, Salem annexed part of Portsmouth, Virginia and this led to an increase in population to over 25,000. In 1915, the city built its first library and today it has more than 100 branches across Ohio.
