Salem, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,754 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an early settler, Samuel Salter. Salem was founded in 1814 by James Caldwell and others as a stage stop on the Mayflower route between Liverpool and Boston. In 1835, it became the county seat of Stark County. In 1925, it moved to its current location near Zanesville after being displaced by that city's growth. The first post office in Salem was established in 1814 and served until 1828. It was located on the east side of present-day Salem Township (now part of Amherst), east of what is now Cleveland Heights. The first store in Salem was built on Academy Hill Road about two miles north of where it currently stands. A gristmill stood on what is now Elm Street in downtown Salem for several years before being destroyed by fire in 1830; according to one account, this mill powered both the first electric lights in Stark County and闻尔斯花样瓶—the world's first running water system—when installed around 1880. Salem Township formed from part of northern Stark County when it was organized as a township on December 1,1837 under territorial government following Ohio's admission into statehood that year. The land for which Salem township exists today had been donated by John Fenton who also donated much acreage for development west of Cleveland including what is now Zanesville and most recently Ironton Heights (partially within present-day Painesville). On November 5th 1830 Pollard erected his sawmill near modern day Zanesville with power supplied by an engine he chiseled out of rock beside the creek bed; this mill operated until 1840 when a new sawmill/gristmill complex were built just northeast off US Route 22 close topresent-day Ironton Heights calling itself "The Salters". By 1850 there were three stores and 12 homes in downtown Salem withVotey & Son Auctioneering Agency located at 4th & Washington Streets while Gafney & Boggs Barber shop occupied Main Street opposite Post Office Ironton Heights grew rapidly during post-Civil War period becoming home to several mills including two soon after its establishment: Jno Hargrave’s Mill Complex (later renamed “The Salters”) on High Street immediately southwest of present day Ironton Heights which produced flour until 1861 when operations were shifted to nearby Mansfield; also operating from 1865 – 1870 was Harvester Works #2 situated immediately southwest corner High Street across from Lake Erie Samuelson’s Clothing Emporium which prospered until closed circa 1890 In addition several small businesses opened up along Upper Arlington Rd adjacent to Brush Creek between 1870 – 1890 such as Davenport Lumber Company operated from 1870′s through 1901; Storer Hardware Company started operation here c 1880 vernacular architecture characterized many rural dwellings constructed herein especially clapboard or rough cut hickory boards often gable roofed style featuring wide eaves characteristic throughout central Ohio characterized primarily by Vaguely Sized Windows which Unitsoperated Open All Day And Night WithLightsAndNoHistoryOfFireExplosionWhich LedToLocalnicknamed “Flathead Village” Afterflathead Rapids upstream According to Census 2000 data there remained only 2 homes remaining standing erect within downtown core area although some alterations have occurred over time such as demolition/removal entire brick wall near intersection Cincinnati Ave SW & Harrison St preceded demolition/removal finished restaurant building directly north corner Harrison St next door relocated front porch due North Platte River flooding demolished large garage constructed approximately 1910 consisting entirely concrete structure attached via heavy chainlink fence enclosing facing sidewalks Blockbuster Video Store opened circa 1990 collapsing shortly thereafter
