Salem, Ohio is a small town in theplain of Medina County, Ohio. It has a population of about 2800 people as of the 2010 census. The area that now includes Salem was originally part of the Northwest Territory under General Washington. After the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution, land on the east side of the river was acquired by Salem and Features Township from France in 1784; it included all or most of what is now Salem Township and much present-day Licking Township. In 1812, when Great Britain ceded Canada to United States as part of the Treaty of Ghent, Oregon Territory was added to United States and General David Wilkinson named it for his friend Colonel Samuel Denny who had served with him at Yorktown. Gun sights were first used in America on July 4th, 1776 when Major George Washington's forces fired artillery over Boston Harbor to celebrate their victory over British forces. Salem, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 113,701 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in Ross County after Cleveland. Salem was founded as a small village in 1814 by Joshua Reynolds and David Fenton, two men who were among the first settlers to come to what is now Ohio from Vermont. In 1821, Salem became part of the Indiana Territory when that territory was organized into states; it remained an unincorporated community until 1917 when it became a city with its own government. The name "Salem" is derived from English settlement agent John Eliot's description of a place where “the apples are red and very good” because of the fertile soil thereabouts. The first white person known to live in what is now Salem was James Kapp, who arrived on July 8, 1814 along with his family from Burlington, Vermont. At that time, all of Ross County had been land grants given out by George Washington to Settlers who would make permanent homes there based on their talents and abilities: Kapp got his grant for 640 acres (248 ha). With only about 30 residents living within 2 miles (3 km) of each other at that time,[1] life was mainly agricultural - primarily growing corn, beans, hay and oats - until 1840 whenikes replaced smallpox as the main cause of death among Native American tribes living near this region due to contact with European settlers.[2] Prior to 1840 most large Indian raids occurred around this area – specifically against groups such as Shawnee and Delaware Indians – so little human interaction took place between these groups which led some early Europeans to believe that these tribes didn't have any firearms or warlike skills[3]. In 1798–1800 Simon Cassiar built a cabin on high ground overlooking today's downtown Salem just south of Independence Road while he studied law under Judge Richard Henderson at Fairfield College (now University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center).[4][5] After studying law for three years at Levin & Cassiar Law Offices in Brownstown Township he moved back eastward in 1800 to marry Elizabeth Hoadley whom he had met during his legal studies at Fairfield College.[6][7] They returned westward across Canada but soon realized they could not support themselves working farmsteads alone so they started renting rooms from people running businesses such as diary publishers Alexander Mitchell Palmer (1802–1881) or Elijah Hicks (1792–1857)[8][9][10] before finally buying their own house in Aurora Avenue NW in 1824[11]. It burned down soon after they moved into it but they rebuilt near current day First Baptist Church which stands today due largely to generous contributions by several local benefactors including Isaac Asimov[12], Will Rogers[13], JB Keller[14], Roy Rogers,[15] Marshall McLuhan,[16][17], Ted Turner,[18],[19],[20],[21]), Irvington native Winton Chambers([22]), real estate developer Arthur Ashe ([23]) and banker Julius Rosenwald ([24]). On October 16th 1870 Henry Clay Frick published an article called "The Growth Of Cities", describing how America's growing cities were changing their physical environment − noting increased traffic congestion caused by streetcar lines linking municipalities together − providing impetus for both public transportation systems like subway bombings [25],[26]), automobiles [27],[28],[29]] and later skyscrapers like New York City skyscraper 80th Street Bridge over East River / Manhattan Bridge/IRT White Plains Line railroad line

Salem, Ohio was founded in 1796 by James K. Polk and the town of Salem developed around it. The first settlers arrived from Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1814, Salem became a village and in 1836, it became a town. The population reached 10,000 in 1850 and peaked at 25,000 in 1910. However, during the Great Depression, the population decreased to fewer than 10 thousand again until it declined below 7 thousand for the first time since 1880 when World War II began. Since then, Salem has experienced steady growth with an increase in jobs and houses starting construction throughout the 2000s which has increased the population to over 16 thousand today. As of 2019 most people living within city limits are employed within manufacturing or services industries while there is also some light industry located outside of downtown Salem as well as several small businesses that support rapid growth. Salem is home to one of America’s largest concentration of Mennonite churches dating back to 1865 with over 1 million members worldwide according to 2018 census data. It is also home to one of America’s oldest universities established in 1796 as part of Ohio Wesleyan University (now Cleveland State University). Other large employers include American Weighing Machine Company (AWM), Dresser & Spivey Co., Inc., First National Bank (FNB), Kroger Supermarkets Corporation,, Lewis Electric Manufacturing Company (LEMC) and United States Steel Corporation (USS). Additionally there are numerous smaller businesses including Bicknell’s Laboratories Inc., Denny's restaurants chain/, Greenleaf Credit Union/, Goodwill Industries/Chamberlain's department store/. There have beenumerous efforts made over recent years by city officials to attract new businesses such as development around Interstate 71 which will create more jobs along with plans for a new stadium that would house more sports teams including football and baseball teams as well as housing developments set to be completed by 2021-2022 making Salem one of Ohio’s fastest growing cities overall.
