Salem, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. It was founded by Dutch settlers in 1796 and became a city in 1837. The town was first known for its gunsmiths, who made rifles and pistols. Salem also produced whisky and cigars. One of the most famous residents of Salem was John Fenton, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor in 1853. He later served as the Governor of Ohio from 1863 to 1865. In addition, several noted athletes were born or lived in Salem during this time: running back George Stevens (1860-1939), baseball player Tony Cingrani (1928-2002), basketball player Julius Erving (1956-2013) and NASCAR driver Carl Edwards (born 1951).

Salem, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 14,691 at the 2010 census. Salem is one of five towns that make up Cleveland's City-County Council district. It is also part of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (Cleveland RTA). The name means "salvation" in English and "settlement" in French. The first European settlers were French Canadians who arrived in 1795 and founded the village of Steubenville on what is nowState Route 44. They named their settlement after George Washington's father, James Washington, and his brother Augustine Steubenville. In 1801, General Anthony Wayne led a military expedition against Native Americans near present-day Akron, Ohio and discovered rich mineral deposits near Salem. This led to the foundation of the city by General Wayne’s troops on October 15, 1802. In 1830, John Lemberg built a gristmill on what is now Market Street in Salem for grinding cornmeal into flour for local merchants and farmers. By 1840, there were over 50 mills operating in Salem; many used water power from nearby hills or caught windstream power from Lake Erie. The milling industry declined duringla World War II because of increased production at other mills but resumed following victory over Japan in 1945. In 1951–1955, Salem was home to both the first air Pollution Control plant established for cities within UAW Local 6005 (now AEP) and also saw heavy manufacturing activity as part of Cuyahoga County during this time period with companies such as United States Rubber Company (USRO), Champion Paper Products Corporation (CPP), Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals Company (J&J), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GTFOY) among others scaling back operations or moving out entirely due to pollution problems unleashed by nuclear testing at Plainfield Arsenal Ammunition Plant located east of town limits thenCenterville Municipal Airport west of town limits). Salem continued to experience heavy manufacturing activity through most of this era as well until it lost its status as an industrial center to Euclid Heights OH when suburbanization began taking hold throughout central Cuyahoga County starting around 1970 creating vast tracts devoid of rural character while large commercial districts emerged along I-675 which paralleled State Route 44 outside town limits - essentially obliterating much former agricultural land within 5 miles or so radius without any corresponding change in character or demographics

In 1903, John Moses Browning developed his first bolt-action rifle which he called the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). This rifle uses a simple breechblock system that allows for multiple rounds to be fired without having to reload. The BAR was soon adopted by many armies around the world and remains one of the most popular firearms in history. Browning also invented what is now known as airsoft guns which use compressed air instead of propellant gas to create an artificial fire experience

The town was originally called Miami, but it was changed to Salem in honor of General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1848-1853. The first settlers arrived in what is now Salem in 1789. They were mostly Native American traders and missionaries who traveled through the area looking for new land to settle. By 1800, many people had moved into Salem from throughout Northeast Ohio due to its fertile soil and mild climate. In 1811, a group of Methodist pastors founded a school in what is now the downtown square. Over time, other religious groups also established themselves in Salem including Baptists (1793), Quakers (1802), Lutherans (1812), and Methodists (1827). At various times during its history, Salem faced significant challenges both within itself and with neighboring towns. For example, it was forced to leave its status as a village after being annexed by Cleveland in 1851 because Cleveland felt it violated his right as mayor to make decisions without the consent of village elders. Furthermore, there were several riots that took place between 1830 and 1840 which left many buildings burned or damaged. Finally, during World War II much activity took place within the local military sector due to nearby Akron’s importance as an airbase manufacturing munitions for Nazi Germany and Japan. Today, Salem remains an active community with a variety of businesses operating within its boundaries including cafes/restaurants/cafes/convenience stores; medical offices; schools; churches; libraries; daycare facilities; auto repair shops;etergonomic consultants; real estate firms; professional sports teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Columbus Blue Jackets football teams; amateur boxing clubs licensed by Greater Cincinnati Boxing Commission); artist studios/yards/lands around town where artists create art outdoors or indoors using natural lightources such as solar power or candles powered by wind turbines
