The local economy also benefited from military installations such as Wright Field located just south of town. As part of efforts to rebuild postwar Germany following World War II, much redevelopment took place around town during the 1960s including construction of many new homes and businesses along Elm Street between Walnut Street and Fifth Avenue Today, Salem continues to enjoy strong economic performance although some challenges remain such as increasing housing costs and lack thereof immediate access to jobs outside the downtown area
