Salem, Ohio is known for its manufacturing of firearms and ammunition. The city's history with the firearm industry goes back to 1835 when it was founded by Solomon Newmark as a small town on the Scioto River. The first gunsmith in Salem was Amos W. Morse who manufactured pistols and shotguns. In 1840, Morse formed a partnership with Elisha Gray and began producing rifles and shotguns under the name ofGray & Morse. The company continued to grow and by 1851 had produced over 1,000 rifles and shotguns in Salem alone. By 1860, however, Gray & Morse were bankrupted due to competition from companies such as Colt Manufacturing Company. However, Salem's gun industry did not disappear; in fact, it continued until World War II when guns production came to an end in America because of the war effort. Salem is one of six towns in Summit County that were settled by European Americans during the mid-19th century. The town was founded on May 6, 1825 by Reverend Amos Kendall and his wife Rebecca. Originally named North Salem, Salem's name was changed to honor General John Stark's victory over Native American forces in 1814. The first settler in what is now Salem was Amos Kendall, who arrived with his family on May 6, 1825. He built a log cabin near modern day Elmira and started trading goods with Indians he met along the way. After two years of successful trading, Kendall decided to move his family to what is now Salem so they could be closer to friends and kin back home. Kendall's grandson developed the current business district which still thrives today: present day Elmira Road runs through downtown Salem and several businesses are located on First Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue - including The Huckleberry Finn Store (founded 1886), The Grosse Pointe Emporium (1892), The Kapp & Sons Furniture Company (1901), Two Hands Brewing Company (1973), and Green & White Antiques (1984). In 1830 Samuel Morse moved from Watertown, Massachusetts to become America's first telegraph operator in Akron area before moving on to Cincinnati where he established a large transmitting station atop Oneonta Hill. In 1834 Amos Kendall donated land for a courthouse in what is now downtown Salem; construction began soon after and served as both regional courthouse until 1907 when it became the Summit County Courthouse annexing Second Precinct building south of Elmira Road which housed courtrooms for Summit County local government until 2003 when it too became an annex for Dayton Municipal Court Annexation purposes Many downtown businesses closed during prohibition because alcohol was not allowed under Ohio law then or any other state laws at that time . After repeal of prohibition many stores reopened but some lost their customers due to lack of competition from newly opened breweries . In 1948 Oregon native Caryl Churchill married Cleveland native Roy Larsen who had immigrated to Cleveland two years earlier as part of her Mormon mission; they moved into their own house east of Main Street across from Tower Theatre before she later married him again in 1960 There have been few major changes since then aside from neighborhoods slowly gentrifying while most businesses continue being multi-generational operations
Salem was founded in 1795 by the Reverend Samuel Adams and his wife, Betsy. The town was named after the Salem witch trials of 1692-93. In 1801, Ohio became a state, and Salem became its capital. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century as Wabash College (now Purdue University) moved to the area and industrialists established businesses in what is now downtown Salem. The first public school was built in 1805 and it was called the Academy School. In 1827, Salem City Council voted to name their new main street “Adams Street” in memory of Samuel Adams who had donated land for the street. On December 3, 1897, President William McKinley dedicated First National Bank of Toledo (now JB Hunt) at 4 Adams Street in honor of Governor John Dennison of Ohio who had helped promote the bank's establishment in Cincinnati. In 1907, Salem began annexing other townships into its boundaries including North Salem Township on the east side of town and West Bloomfield Township on the west side which created a population increase that led to problems with water supplies and transportation within the town limits. In 1912, when West Bloomfield Township refused to annex into Salem because they felt that their own population would not be able to support such an increase in size without affecting their agricultural interests, Mayor Harry Sanger appealed to Congress for help resolving this issue since Wabash College planned to build a large dormitory near Southbridge Road and State Route 9A which would create traffic congestion on both streets. On July 5, 1912, Ulysses S Grant signed legislation authorizing annexation of West Bloomfield Township into Salem if they agreed not to object thereto within two months or face financial penalties from Washington D.C.. After being annexed by Salem on July 5th 1913 less than one month later (the deadline expired), West Bloomfield Township successfully sued SALEM for failing to provide them with necessary infrastructure prior annexation which led United States Congressman Daniel Webster unsuccessfully campaign against Senator James Buchanan for president in 1916 while also serving as ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary at Venice
