Salem was founded in 1786 by the Kentucky farmers James and Sally Caldwell. The Caldwells were one of the first families to settle in what is now Salem Township. The town was named for General John Wayne, who fought in the American Revolution. The townspeople built their first house on the present site of Main Street in 1787. In 1800, a school was established in Salem and kindergarten followed two years later. In 1814, a sawmill was built and became one of the largest businesses in town.
In 1818, Salem became part of Ohio Territory and it remained an agricultural community until 1860 when manufacturing began to grow here as well. A post office opened in 1865 and grew into a large city by 1880 with over 100 residents. By 1912, most of the manufacturing had left for larger cities but some small businesses remain today such as Smith's Rubber Company which produced tires during World War II.
The population size has shrunk since 1980 with only about 50 people living here currently; however, there are still many active businesses that contribute to Salem's economy including engineering firms like Deere & Company as well as retail outlets such as Sears & Roebuck which operates locally from its headquarters on High Street.
